Начиная с платформы .NET Framework 4 параметр valueName больше не ограничен 255 символами. Однако параметр keyName продолжает иметь ограничение на 255 символов.
Так как многие значения могут храниться в каждом разделе реестра, необходимо использовать valueName параметр, чтобы указать определенное значение, которое необходимо задать.
Note
Раздел реестра может содержать одно значение, которое не связано с каким-либо именем. Если это неназваемое значение отображается в редакторе реестра, строка "(По умолчанию)" отображается вместо имени. Чтобы задать это неименованное значение, укажите null или пустую строку ("") для valueName.
Если valueName он не существует в ключе, он создается, а связанное значение имеет valueзначение .
Если keyName указывает вложенный ключ, который не существует, вложенный ключ создается в указанном корневом каталоге. Например, в Visual Basic строке "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MyTestKey" создается подраздел "MyTestKey" в корневом каталоге HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Строка "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MyTestKey\Key2\Key3" создает вложенные подразделы "MyTestKey", "MyTestKey\Key2" и "MyTestKey\Key2\Key3".
Допустимые корневые имена включают HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_USERS, HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA, HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG и HKEY_DYN_DATA.

Метод SetValue открывает раздел реестра, задает значение и закрывает ключ при каждом вызове. Если необходимо изменить большое количество значений, RegistryKey.SetValue метод может обеспечить лучшую производительность. Класс RegistryKey также предоставляет методы, позволяющие добавить список управления доступом (ACL) в раздел реестра, проверить тип данных значения перед получением его и удалить ключи.
Эта перегрузка SetValue хранит 64-разрядные целые числа в виде строк (RegistryValueKind.String). Чтобы сохранить 64-разрядные числа в качестве RegistryValueKind.QWord значений, используйте перегрузку SetValue(String, String, Object, RegistryValueKind) метода.
Эта перегрузка SetValue сохраняет все строковые значения в виде RegistryValueKind.String объектов, даже если они содержат расширенные ссылки на переменные среды. Начиная с платформы .NET Framework 4 параметр valueName больше не ограничен 255 символами. Однако параметр keyName продолжает иметь ограничение на 255 символов.
Так как многие значения могут храниться в каждом разделе реестра, необходимо использовать valueName параметр, чтобы указать определенное значение, которое необходимо задать.

Раздел реестра может содержать одно значение, которое не связано с каким-либо именем. Если это неназваемое значение отображается в редакторе реестра, строка "(По умолчанию)" отображается вместо имени. Чтобы задать это неименованное значение, укажите null или пустую строку ("") для valueName.
Если valueName он не существует в ключе, он создается, а связанное значение имеет valueзначение .
Если keyName указывает вложенный ключ, который не существует, вложенный ключ создается в указанном корневом каталоге. Например, в Visual Basic строке "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MyTestKey" создается подраздел "MyTestKey" в корневом каталоге HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Строка "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MyTestKey\Key2\Key3" создает вложенные подразделы "MyTestKey", "MyTestKey\Key2" и "MyTestKey\Key2\Key3".
Допустимые корневые имена включают HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_USERS, HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA, HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG и HKEY_DYN_DATA.

Метод SetValue открывает раздел реестра, задает значение и закрывает ключ при каждом вызове. Если необходимо изменить большое количество значений, RegistryKey.SetValue метод может обеспечить лучшую производительность. Класс RegistryKey также предоставляет методы, позволяющие добавить список управления доступом (ACL) в раздел реестра, проверить тип данных значения перед получением его и удалить ключи.
Если тип указанного value не соответствует указанному valueKind, и данные не могут быть преобразованы, ArgumentException создается. Например, можно сохранить как объект System.Int64RegistryValueKind.DWord, но только если его значение меньше максимального значения System.Int32. Не удается сохранить одно строковое значение в виде RegistryValueKind.MultiString.

Если в поле передаются RegistryValueKind.DWordRegistryValueKind.QWordили передаются значения, преобразование выполняется с помощью инвариантного языка и региональных параметров.
