Migrate to Project Online from Project Server

Learn more about upgrading from your Project Server 2016 or Project Server 2013 on-premises environment to Project Online.

Is Project Online for me?

The following are considerations you need to make when planning to migrate to Project Online from your existing Project Server environment:

Why would I prefer to migrate to Project Online Things that might prevent me from migrating to Project Online
I have mobile users.
Cost savings on hardware and software installation.
After migration, low costs to maintain my environment (for example, automatic updates, guaranteed uptime, etc.).
Business rules restrict me from operating my business in the cloud.
I need control of updates to my environment.

Migrate to Project Online

You can do the following to manually migrate your project plan data:

  1. Save your project plans from Project Server to MPP format.

  2. Using Project Professional 2013, Project Professional 2016, Project Professional 2019 Preview, or the Project Online Desktop Client, open each MPP file, and then save and publish it to Project Online.

You can also manually create your PWA configuration in Project Online (for example, recreate any needed custom fields or enterprise calendars).
