Administering Address Book Servers

Topic Last Modified: 2009-02-15

The Address Book Server runs as a part of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Front End service. This service runs on the following servers:

  • Standard Edition server
  • Front End Server in an Enterprise pool

The Address Book Server performs two important functions:

  • The primary function is providing global address list information from Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to Office Communications Server 2007 R2. If Microsoft Office Communicator were to access Active Directory Domain Services directly, network performance could be affected. To make address book updates faster and more efficient, the Address Book Server acts as an intermediary to provide address book information to Office Communicator clients.
  • The secondary and optional function is performing phone number normalization for Office Communicator telephony integration. For details about phone number normalization, see the planning and deployment documentation for Enterprise Voice in the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 TechNet Library at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=132106.
