FAST Search Server in an overall SharePoint Server farm topology
The FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm (back-end) provides the processing, indexing, and query matching capabilities.
The parent SharePoint Server 2010 farm (front-end) communicates with the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm through the FAST Search Query SSA and the FAST Search Content SSA.
SQL Server is used for configuration data, crawl database and property store for the people search index.
Note
The FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm does not use the SQL Server database to store indexed properties. This differs from SharePoint Server 2010 search, which uses SQL Server as the property store.
