This article helps you setup your Microsoft cloud environment to support SAP Gateway for Microsoft with Office 365 for professionals and small businesses and Microsoft Azure.
About the Azure AD directory used by SAP Gateway for Microsoft
Office 365 subscriptions with SharePoint Online are provisioned with an Azure AD directory that you can manage by using Office 365. If you have an Office 365 subscription without an Azure subscription, you can’t manage the directory that was provisioned with Office 365 within Azure.
This is important if you plan to deploy apps for SharePoint or apps for Office that get SAP data via SAP Gateway for Microsoft because you must be able to manage the Azure AD directory that’s used by Office 365 within the Azure Management Portal. It’s also important to understand that when Office 365 is used with SAP Gateway for Microsoft, you must deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft to the Azure AD directory that’s used by Office 365.
Choosing an Office 365 subscription
The following Office 365 subscriptions don’t support the development and deployment of an app for SharePoint or an app for Office. This is because they don’t provide a developer site or an app catalog.
Office 365 Small Business
Office 365 Small Business Premium
Office 365 Enterprise K1
Office 365 Government K1
The SharePoint Online Service Description lists the Office 365 plans that support the development and deployment of SharePoint Apps and apps for Office. They are the plans that have a developer site and an App Catalog, which includes all of the Enterprise plans.
Setting up Office 365 with Microsoft Azure
Your organization might currently have one, both, or neither of these Microsoft technologies. The following table shows what you need to do to make sure that you can manage the Azure AD directory that’s used by Office 365 within the Azure Management Portal. Notice that the steps vary depending on the Microsoft cloud technologies that you currently have as a starting point.

Adding an Office 365 subscription
There are two ways to add a new Office 365 subscription when you already have an Azure subscription.
Option 1: Purchase a new Office 365 subscription, and then add its directory to your Azure subscription.
This is the easiest option and the best for those who haven't identified an existing directory that they want to deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft to. By using this option, you purchase a new Office 365 subscription, which is provisioned with a new Azure AD directory, and then you add that directory to your Azure subscription.
Option 2: Use an existing directory in Azure with a new Office 365 subscription.
This is the best option for those who want to use a directory that already exists in Azure with their new Office 365 tenant. Typically, you would choose this option if you have an existing directory in Azure that already contains the users who will use SAP Gateway for Microsoft or if you’ve already synchronized those user accounts from an on-premises directory, such as Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).
With this option, you identify a directory in your Azure subscription that you want to deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft to, and then you add an Office 365 subscription that uses that directory.
Tip
To sign in to the Azure Management Portal, you need to have a subscription for Azure and be a service administrator or co-administrator on that subscription.
Option 1: Purchase a new Office 365 subscription, and then add its directory to your Azure subscription
Complete this procedure if you don’t have a particular directory that already exists in Azure that you want to use to deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft.
To add a new Office 365 subscription to an existing Azure subscription
Sign up for an Office 365 subscription, see Compare all Office 365 for business plans on the Office 365 site.
The Office 365 subscription is provisioned with an Azure AD directory, but it’s not yet associated with your existing Azure subscription.
To enable the Azure AD directory that was provisioned with your new Office 365 subscription to be managed in your Azure subscription, follow the steps in Manage the directory for your Office 365 subscription in Azure.
Option 2: Use an existing directory in Azure with a new Office 365 subscription
Complete the steps in this section if you want to sign up for a new Office 365 subscription that uses an existing directory in an Azure subscription.
Before you begin
Before you deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft, you have to know which Azure AD directory in an Azure subscription that you want to deploy SAP Gateway for Microsoft to. This directory will be used with the new Office 365 subscription that you sign up for in the following procedure.
You have to be a global administrator of the Azure AD directory, and this global administrator account has to be a work or school account in the directory. This work or school account is typically in the form of: <username>@contoso.onmicrosoft.com.
The following two procedures show how to collect the information that you need and also how to create a directory in Azure AD, if you need it.
Add an Office 365 subscription
Now that you have the information that you need, follow these steps to add an Office 365 subscription that uses the directory that you’ll use to configure SAP Gateway for Microsoft.
To add an Office 365 subscription to an existing Azure AD directory
Go to https://portal.office.com and sign in as a global administrator of the Azure AD domain that you plan to use for SAP Gateway for Microsoft. This must be an organizational ID in the form of: <username>@contoso.onmicrosoft.com.
Note
If you were previously logged into Azure as a different user, you might have to first delete your browser’s cookies.
On the Welcome to Office 365 page, you’ll see a message that states that Office 365 services are not available. This is because the global administrator account that you signed in with doesn’t have an Office 365 subscription associated with it. Click Purchase Services, and follow the instructions to purchase an Office 365 subscription.
The new Office 365 subscription uses the directory in an Azure subscription that’s associated with the global administrator account that you signed in with in this step.
