Disconnect from a Telnet Server
Applies To: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Vista
When you have finished whatever you needed to do on the Telnet server disconnect your session.
Any user account can be used to complete this procedure.
Disconnecting from a Telnet server
You can perform this procedure using either of the following methods:
Log off from a Telnet session
Disconnect your session to the Telnet server
To log off from a Telnet session
In your Telnet session, close any program you are currently running.
At the Microsoft Telnet> command prompt, type the command:
exit
After displaying the message Connection to host lost, the Telnet Client service stops.
Additional considerations
- The command used to log off of the Telnet server varies based on the operating system and Telnet Server software running on the Telnet server. The command shown here is appropriate for the Telnet Server service provided with Windows.
To disconnect your session to the Telnet Server
On the Telnet client, switch to command mode. See Switch Between Session Mode and Command Mode.
At the Microsoft Telnet> command prompt, type c (for close), and then press ENTER.
At this point, you can do one of the following:
To close the Telnet Client service, type q (for quit), and then press ENTER.
To connect to a different Telnet server, see Connect to a Telnet Server as a Standard User.
Additional considerations
- Disconnecting from the Telnet server without first closing the program you are running and saving your documents can result in data loss. Run this procedure only if your data is saved and your programs are closed, or if the server has stopped responding and you cannot close your programs.
