Den generiska knappenheten är en standardenhet för att rapportera knapphändelser genom maskinvaruavbrott och kopplar dessa avbrott till specifika användningar som definieras i Human Interface Device (HID)-specifikationen.
För att kunna uttrycka funktionen för en knapp i operativsystemet krävs två informationsdelar:
- Användning av HID-kontrollen
- Användning av HID-samlingen som kontrollen tillhör
En användning är en kombination av en användningssida och ett användnings-ID. Knappen Volym Upp identifieras till exempel som "Volym Upp-användning" (användningssida 0x0C, användnings-ID 0xE9) i Konsumentkontroll-samlingen (användningssida 0x0C, användnings-ID 0x01).
ACPI-enhets-ID för en allmän knappenhet är ACPI0011. Windows läser in den In box-drivrutin som tillhandahålls av Microsoft, Hidinterrupt.sys för den enheten.
