The importance of emphasizing STEM for girls

Despite the high priority placed on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and computer science (CS) education across the United States, the fact remains that only a fraction of girls and women are likely to pursue STEM degrees and careers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that technology professionals will experience the highest growth in job numbers between now and 2030. Failing to bring the minds and perspectives of half the population to STEM and computer science fields stifles innovation and makes it less likely that educators will solve today’s social challenges at scale.

Educators are invaluable when it comes to encouraging girls to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) knowledge and careers. This module provides educators with actionable steps to encourage the next STEM leaders and bring more gender balance to the equation.

Based on research including surveys, focus groups, and data analysis, five key insights were identified to help close the gender gap in STEM and CS:

  • Provide hands-on experience
  • Provide encouragement
  • Encourage a growth mindset
