Exercise - Set up a main asset and an asset component

This exercise is written to use the Cronus sample company from the US version of Business Central. You might need to make adjustments to the steps if you use the sample company from your country or region.

Scenario

John Roberts ordered a monitor for his new laptop. You need to set up a new fixed asset using the following information:

  • Description: Monitor ProArt PA32-K

  • Responsible employee: John Roberts

  • Depreciation method: Straight-line

  • Depreciation starting date: April 20, 2020

  • No. of depreciation years: 4

  • Vendor: Wide World Importers

  • Maintenance vendor: Wide World Importers

You decide to assign the monitor as a component to the Microsoft Surface Book fixed asset. Because you should be able to post to the main asset, enable the Allow Posting to Main Asset option on the Fixed Asset Setup page.

Tasks

  • Create a new fixed asset for the monitor.

  • Assign the monitor as a component to the Microsoft Surface Book fixed asset.

  • Enable Allow Posting to Main Asset on the Fixed Asset Setup page.

Steps

  1. Select the Search for page icon in the upper-right corner of the page, enter fixed assets, and then select the related link.

  2. Select New.

  3. In the Description field, enter Monitor ProArt PA32-K.

  4. In the Class Code field, enter TANGIBLE.

  5. In the Subclass Code field, enter IT-EQUIP.

  6. In the Responsible Employee field, enter JR.

  7. Expand the Depreciation Book FastTab and fill in the fields as follows:

    • Depreciation Method: Straight-line

    • Depreciation Starting Date: 04/20/20

    • No. of Depreciation Years: 4

  8. Expand the Maintenance FastTab.

  9. In the Vendor No. field, enter 40000.

  10. In the Maintenance Vendor No. field, enter 40000.

  11. Close the Fixed Asset Card page.

  12. Select the fixed asset for the Microsoft Surface Book.

  13. Select Navigate > Main Asset > Main Asset Components.

  14. In the FA No. field, select the fixed asset for the Monitor ProArt PA32-K.

  15. Close the Main Asset Components page.

  16. Select the Search for page icon in the upper-right corner of the page, enter fixed asset setup, and then select the related link.

  17. On the General FastTab, select Allow Posting to Main Asset.

  18. Close the Fixed Asset Setup page.
