Our new Visual Studio 2005 Book
You may have heard that we have a new book out for Visual Studio 2005. The unfortunate bit of news is that it is only available if you buy the boxed version of Visual Studio, meaning that if you subscribe to MSDN, there will be no way for you to get a copy.
We are trying to convince MSPress to put out a version of the book on store shelves. If you wish to get a copy even if you are a MSDN subscriber, you can add a comment to this posting. With enough votes, I will then send this URL to the appropriate people in MSPress to show that there is interest.
[EDIT] One note about this: it is not possible to just send a copy of the book, but rather this is about making the book available for purchase at bookstores.

Absolutely this ought to be published. The 2003 version was critical for learning how to extend the IDE. I've already run into all sorts of differences with 2005, and would certainly find an update to this book extremely useful. If it's anything like the 2003 version, I'd buy it and recommend it to anyone attempting to automate or extend the VS 2005 environment.Anonymous

This looks like the first step to making MSDN useless. Maybe I should reconsider subscribing next year! I EXPECT things to be available to me.Anonymous
November 29, 2005
Sorry, but I don't really care because if you subscribe to MSDN subscription, you should be more than mid level programmer, which means you may not need the kind of information you get from the book.Anonymous

Yes, I'd like the book.Anonymous

I found the previous book for VS2003 very informative and it saved me many hours of pointless searching for information. I am a very competent developer and consequently my time is precious......LET ME BUY THE BOOK!Anonymous
November 29, 2005
Yes, please make this book available! There seem to be lots of changes to things like custom project templates, and the MSDN docs are not enough, people really need getting-started type help also.Anonymous
November 29, 2005
This is most wanted book for me for the next year. Please make it available for everyone! Thanks.Anonymous

Tacking my name of the end of this list. I want to pay good money for this book.

We'd like to get a copy too. The last book was very helpful in our work in VS 2003.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Whatever are the (economic?) reasons behind such an unfortunate decision, they should be revisited.
If the book doesn't find its way to bookstores, this will be an exceptional case where Microsoft acts against its own best principles (doing everything to provide developers with quality books and documentation in general).Anonymous
November 30, 2005
I'm interested in this book as well.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
I would purchase a copy of this book if made available to the general public. I am a VSTD subscriber and have perused most of the MSDN docs on automation and extensibility, but I always enjoy reading/learning more.Anonymous

I would be interested in buying this book.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Yea, that would be really nice but I'd probably be more exited if MS would just make VS 2005 available.
(If you don't know what I'm referring to, try buying a copy).Anonymous

Balldmer is getting more and more like Pope Leo X supporting the advice of his sycophant bishops who advocate the death of Martin Luther and all who support the expression and publication of information the peasantry seeks.
Make the book available to all who want it.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Wow, that is bad news, I really would like to have a copy. It is unbelivable if you pay more that you get less!Anonymous
November 30, 2005
The 2003 version is indispensible. I'd be highly disappointed if there was no way to get the 2005 version. I'd love a copy.Anonymous

I would definitely be interested in a copy.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
We'd certainly be interested. I've been anticipating an update for some time, and quite frankly I'm astonished to hear that MSPress only want to supply it to such a restricted audience!
If they do, they're mad. Get it onto Amazon!!!Anonymous

Definitely interested as well. The book on VS2003 was very useful for our VS Addin development.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Yep, count me in. Maybe they could make a PDF available for us MSDN folk to download?Anonymous
November 30, 2005
I want a copy.
It is advertised that by registering VS 2005 you get access to an electronic copy of this book. Here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/regbenefits/
So I took the bait, registered my licensed copy of VS (I'm a universal subscription holder), only to find that the book is NOT available on the vs 2005 registration benifits portal. Not a very good way to encourage people to register, if you ask me :-)Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Your first book was invaluable in developing my Addin... I need the new version, count me in as well.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
me one million two hundred and forty seventh
seriously - the documentation that comes with the MSDN about extensibility is sparse at best. we need the book.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Can we at least make the digital version available to MSDN subscribers?Anonymous
November 30, 2005
yes, I want the book.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
I'm opposed to having to purchase an item Microsoft has considered important enough to ship with their boxed product. I think this book should be provided to MSDN subscribers at least as a .pdf subscriber download if a physical copy is not provided in the MSDN updates sent out to subscribers.Anonymous
November 30, 2005
Umm let's see, offer the book for sale, make money and given the comments above please a key part of your developer community or give the book away for free to a limited audience and annoy the community. A bit of a no brainer if you ask me.Anonymous

Next Best: Make available on safaribooksonline.com.Anonymous

I need this book. I couldn't find any samples in vs 2005 of how to write addins, I had to use the wizard which leaves a thing or two to wish for. I couldn't find any info on how to use the new tool window 'shim' which should prevent using a com-wrapper as in vs2003.Anonymous

It's almost criminal to not share such a great resource of information on the IDE with the bulk of the developer community that use this product on a daily basis. At least make it available for the MSDN subscribers!!!Anonymous

December 04, 2005
Having just started to look into VS extensibility the 2003 version of the book has offered a lot of useful knowledge, tips and insights that it would have taken a long time to extract from the documentation. Not having a publically available edition for 2005 would be disappointing, especially considering the changes in 2005 such as the Class Designer, and all those around Team Suite. It sure would be a useful title to own a copy of.Anonymous
December 05, 2005

Just registered my copy as Team Edition for Software Developer and received an email from microsoft mentioned that the book was available to download. So I went ahead to download it. Unfortunately, it was another book with similar title, "working with microsoft visual studio 2005 TEAM SYSTEM", not the one by Craig as all of us here expected "working with microsoft visual studio 2005".
Someone must be kidding us! Hate that. Don't you?
Craig, could you let us know the exact title of your new book?Anonymous

Yes, please make the extensibility book available. I have an MSDN Universal subscription. Are you telling me that I cannot get this book without spending even more $$$$ to buy an entire boxed set, for 1 book of essential information?
That is just poor product support.
Come on Microsoft, I know you can do better.
Best regards,
Daren.Anonymous

I don't see much content on VSPackages in the "Mastering Web Development with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005" or "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" books, Is there anywhere else.
By the way I downloaded the softcopy of "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" from msdn, it isn't much use.
I registered my VS 2005 and received and email with a link to the download site for the "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" book (use IE only as Mozilla doesnt seem to work).Anonymous
