No audio with Windows 11

I have a new ASUS laptop with Windows 11. It no longer has any audio output to the laptop speakers. I ran a trouble shooting session with Windows and did not hear a ping. I checked to see if I had muted my volume but I did not. Volume says 100%. Also l made sure that was the case with both speaker selections. The trouble shooting session says it checked the audio driver and said that was the problem. What do I do now?

    Hello Keith,

Thank you for posting question on Microsoft Windows Forum!

Based on the issue description as well as Windows troubleshooter specifically flagged the audio driver. You can try the following suggested troubleshooting steps to get the audio fixed.

    • Open Sound settings. Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings → under Output, confirm the laptop speakers are selected (not Bluetooth or HDMI). Also, try to perform physical check. On some ASUS models, there is a Function Key (like F1 through F12) that has a speaker icon with a slash through it. Sometimes this "hard mute" can override the Windows volume slider. Try pressing Fn + [Mute Key] just to be absolutely sure.
    • If the driver is "fine" but the service that runs it has stalled, you will not hear a thing. Try to check the Windows Audio Service by pressing Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter. Scroll down to Windows Audio. Right-click it and select Restart. Making sure the Startup type is set to Automatic.
    • User's image
    • ASUS laptops probably come with a dedicated app called MyASUS that is much better at finding hardware-specific driver conflicts. You can press the Windows key and search for MyASUS. Open it. Go to Customer Support (usually a headset icon on the left). Click on LiveUpdate. Switch the tab from "Essentials" to Latest to see if there is a specific Realtek or Audio driver update waiting. If there is, install it and reboot.
    • Try to reinstall the driver via Device Manager by pressing Win + X → select Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click your audio device (usually Realtek(R) Audio or Intel Smart Sound Technology) → choose Uninstall device. Restart your laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically. If sound still does not work, download the latest driver from the ASUS Support site for your exact laptop model and install it manually.

You can consult the following article for more information about troubleshooting for audio issues.

Follow these steps in order on the Windows 11 ASUS laptop:

    1. Confirm the correct output device
      1. Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      2. Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider (Select a sound output).
      3. Make sure the laptop speakers (e.g., Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio) or similar) are selected, not a monitor or other device.
    2. Check sound settings and that speakers are enabled
      1. Right‑click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      2. Open the list of audio devices and then More mixer settings.
      3. Ensure none of the device or app sliders show an “x” (muted). Unmute and set to a reasonable level.
      4. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      5. Under Advanced, select More sound settings.
      6. On the Playback tab, select the laptop speakers, choose Properties.
      7. Under Device usage, make sure Use this device (enable) is selected.
    3. Set the laptop speakers as the default device
      1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      2. In Output, select the laptop speakers as the output device. This also sets them as default.
    4. Turn off audio enhancements
      1. Go to Start > Settings > Sound.
      2. In Output, select the laptop speakers.
      3. Scroll to Advanced settings and set Audio enhancements to Off.
    5. Run the built‑in audio troubleshooter again (different path)
      1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      2. In the Audio section, select Run and apply any fixes it suggests.
    6. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      1. Open Device Manager (search for “device manager” from Start).
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right‑click the laptop’s audio device (e.g., Realtek or similar) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers and complete the wizard.
      4. If there is still no sound, in Device Manager right‑click the same device and choose Uninstall device.
      5. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
      6. Restart the PC (Start > Power > Restart). Windows will reinstall the audio driver automatically.
    7. Try the generic Windows audio driver or roll back
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the audio device, select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      2. Select High Definition Audio Device, then Next and finish the install.
      3. If the problem started after a Windows Update and sound used to work, open the device Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if available.
    8. Check Windows Update and restart
      1. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
      2. Install any available updates.
      3. Save work, then Start > Power > Update and restart (if shown).

If after these steps there is still no audio and Windows reports a driver problem, install the latest audio driver for the exact ASUS model from ASUS’s support site, then repeat the restart.
