Unable to access teams meetings - app just hangs when joining meeting

My teams has been working with no issues until the last month or so when I'm having issues joining meetings. I can access teams, message, chat, video calls etc but when attempting to join meetings, the screen just hangs, not responding and when exiting I get the options to - Close the program, Wait for the program to respond. Restarting makes no difference. I have repaired the App and also reinstalled.

Still unable to join meetings but all other functionality works.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Based on the described symptoms (Teams works normally but hangs only when joining meetings, and repair/reinstall did not help), the issue is most likely with cached Teams data or with how meeting joins are being initiated, especially for external meetings.

Try the following steps in order:

    1. Confirm the correct Teams app and account
If there are both personal and work/school versions of Teams installed or multiple accounts signed in, ensure the work/school Teams client is used and that the account that received the meeting invite is the one signed in. Using the wrong client or account can prevent meetings (especially external ones) from loading correctly.
    2. Clear the Teams cache fully
Corrupted cache is a common cause of hanging when joining meetings. Clear the cache, not just repair the app. Windows – Method 1 (Reset the app)
      1. Open SettingsAppsInstalled apps.
      2. Search for Microsoft Teams.
      3. Select the New Microsoft Teams entry → More optionsAdvanced options.
      4. In Reset, select Reset.
      5. Restart Teams and try joining a meeting again.
Windows – Method 2 (Delete cache files)
      1. Quit Teams completely (right‑click the Teams icon in the taskbar → Quit).
      2. Press Windows+R, paste: %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams and select OK.
      3. Delete all files and folders in that directory.
      4. Restart Teams and re‑test joining a meeting.
      macOS – Clear cache
      1. Quit Teams (right‑click the dock icon → Quit or press Command+Q).
      2. Open Terminal and run, pressing Return after each line: rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
      3. Restart Teams and try joining a meeting.
    3. Try joining from a private browser session
If the meeting link is in a calendar (such as Google Calendar) or email, open it in a browser Incognito/Private window and sign in with the same work/school account that has access to the meeting. This helps rule out browser cookies or cached auth issues, especially with external‑org meetings.
    4. Check if the problem is only with external meetings
If meetings from external partners hang but internal meetings work:
      • Ask the external organizer to confirm that their meeting allows external participants and is not restricted to their own domain.
      • Ensure the meeting is configured as an online Teams meeting and not restricted by their org’s policies.
    5. Fully uninstall Teams and remove leftover data
If the issue persists after clearing cache, perform a clean reinstall:
      1. Uninstall Microsoft Teams from Settings → Apps.
      2. Manually search under the user’s AppData (for example, %userprofile%\AppData) for any remaining folders with “Teams” in the name and delete them.
      3. Reinstall Teams from the Microsoft Store and test joining a meeting again.
    6. If meetings are not available at all
If the join option itself is missing or meetings are not available in Teams, and the mailbox is hosted on‑premises, ensure the Exchange environment is Exchange 2016 CU3 or later. Older on‑premises Exchange versions do not support Teams meeting functionality.

If, after these steps, joining still hangs while chat and calls work, capture the exact behavior (internal vs external meetings, desktop vs web) and escalate through the organization’s IT support or Microsoft support with logs for deeper analysis.
