As a church, we recently transferred our billing to tax exempt status. The tax exempt status was changed April 10, 2026. We paid our annual payment of $107.42 for 3/23/2026-3/22/2027 on March 22, 2026. I am inquiring about getting a refund for our payment made on March 22. I am not sure who I should be contacting about this.

Cindy

Hello Cindy Beard,

It requires tax‑exempt status to be on file at the time of purchase. If the exemption is approved after a charge is made, the issue is a refund of the tax portion only, not the full subscription charge. This policy is stated in Microsoft’s tax‑exempt and billing documentation. For more: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-provide-tax-exempt-documentation-to-microsoft-customer-support-services-9066420c-1ef6-f938-12ed-24534170f124

Because your organization’s tax‑exempt status became effective on April 10, 2026, and the annual subscription was paid earlier on March 22, 2026, it does not automatically refund the full subscription amount. Only the sales tax portion (if tax was charged) may be eligible for refund, subject to review. With your case, you should contact Microsoft Billing Support directly and request a tax refund review.

Once you’ve tried the steps above, you can also reach out directly to the Microsoft Support team. It may offer live chat and, depending on your subscription/region, an option to request a callback:

  • Go to https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact
  • Search for "Refund Microsoft 365 subscription" in the search box.
  • Click "Get Help", then scroll to the bottom and select "Contact Support”.
  • When prompted to select Products & Services, Choose:
    • Product: Microsoft 365
    • Category: Subscription, Account, Billing
    • Issue: Tax / Invoice / Refund
    • Look for and select "Chat with a support agent in your web browser" (during business hours). Once connect, explain your situation clearly.

Please note that the chat support team only works during certain working hours. Therefore, if the last window indicates that you are unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. That way, they can call you and help you.

Please understand that this is a user‑to‑user support forum. Moderators, contributors, and external Microsoft staff cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back‑end systems. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas. Still, I will do my best to assist you with everything I can.

To refund and check for refund eligible you can refer to this website, follow the steps instruction:

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

Best Regards

Contact Microsoft billing/support directly, as only they can review the church’s account, confirm the tax‑exempt status date, and determine whether a refund or credit is possible for the March 22, 2026 payment.

Use one of these approaches based on the available options in the context:

    1. If there is a Microsoft 365 admin center for the subscription
      1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an admin account.
      2. Create a support request from the admin center for billing/tax issues and include:
        • Organization name (First Southern Baptist Church, Augusta).
        • Subscription details and invoice/order number for the 3/23/2026–3/22/2027 charge.
        • Date the account was marked tax‑exempt (April 10, 2026).
        • Request for a refund or credit for tax charged on the March 22 payment.
    2. If using general Microsoft account billing (no admin center access)
      1. Go to the Microsoft Support contact page: https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/
      2. Sign in with the account that manages the subscription.
      3. Select the relevant product (for example, Microsoft 365 & Office).
      4. Choose a billing category such as “Billing and Payment updates” or “Manage my subscription.”
      5. Choose Chat with a support agent (or phone callback if offered).
      6. Provide the same details as above and specify that the organization is now tax‑exempt and is requesting a review of the March 22, 2026 charge.

If the subscription was purchased under a professional support or business program, tax‑exempt documentation may be required. For guidance on tax‑exempt documentation for Microsoft Customer Support Services, see “How to provide tax exempt documentation to Microsoft Customer Support Services” referenced from the Support for Business FAQ.

Note: Community forums and Q&A sites cannot access billing records or process refunds, so contacting Microsoft Support through the official support channels is required.
