Teams Test Mic and Speaker Not Working — Known Issue?

Is anyone else having problems with the Test mic and speaker function in the Microsoft Teams desktop app?

I’m using a headset and it works perfectly with YouTube and other audio, but the Teams test isn’t working. I also tried a different pair of earphones and had exactly the same issue.

I’m wondering if this is a temporary Teams bug or a known issue affecting other users, or if it’s just something on my side. I have an actual Teams meeting coming up, so I’m a little concerned, although I’m hoping the audio will work normally during the meeting.

Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Are you using this "Test mic and speaker" option in the meeting window?

I have tested this feature several times and must conclude that this test option is not reliable. Speaker test was working, but Microphone test was working sporadically only.

Unfortunately, the "Test call" option in Settings -> Devices is not available when using Teams with a personal subscription. This option is only available with a business subscription.

Yes, I’m using the exact same “Test mic and speaker” option shown in your screenshot after selecting the headset. Neither the speaker nor microphone test works for me.

It’s helpful to know that Settings → Devices → Test call is only available with a business subscription, and that the “Test mic and speaker” feature can be unreliable. That’s reassuring, as it suggests the issue may not be on my end.

My issue is that I hear nothing during the speaker test, but I DO hear the playback for the microphone test.
I have followed exhaustive suggested routines of resetting and reinstalling and checking app permissions and selecting correct devices (I only have one audio output option) and volume levels.
I am just not confident that when I join a meeting I will hear anyone.

Unfortunately, this is a known bug (bug-by-design) in the "Test mic and speaker" feature.

If you can hear the playback for the microphone test, then this means that both microphone and speaker work. Nothing to worry about.

Yep can confirm the same bug on the latest version of Teams (26213.1006.5011.1671) on Mac M1 Silicon running Tahoe

Test mic worked fine, test sound doesn't work with built-in speakers or headphones - no audio is ever played.

Was able to confirm it was actually working by signing in on my phone and joining the same meeting

I just wanted to add that I had a Teams conference call last week, and both my microphone and speakers worked perfectly during the actual call, even though neither test worked beforehand.

Hopefully this helps a bit. It might be worth having a backup option, such as joining the meeting by phone, just in case the audio doesn't work during the actual meeting.

The AI answer is correct : there's no known bug about Teams' test call feature.

Just to clarify : which version of Microsoft Teams are you using currently ? Is it the personal version (with a personal Microsoft account) or a business/school account (provided by your workplace) ?
The "test call" feature does not exist yet in the free version of Teams.

If you're using a Windows PC, make sure you've selected the correct headset in the Teams settings panel, and not a software proxy like Intel Smart Sound. If you're using a Mac, check in the System Settings if you're not blocking Teams from playing/capturing sound.

Hello,

I’m using Microsoft 365 Personal Classic with a personal Microsoft account.

I’ve checked the Teams settings and confirmed that my headset is selected as the audio device. I can hear YouTube audio through the headset normally, but the Test call still doesn’t work.

Teams provides Make a test call in Settings and more > Settings > Devices to test microphone and speaker setup before a meeting.
The test call feature is available in English only.
The test call feature is unavailable on Teams for web.
