Unable to create Outlook alias ******@outlook.com even though Microsoft says no such account exists

I am trying to add the Outlook alias ******@outlook.com to my existing Microsoft account.

My current Microsoft account uses:

  • ******@gmail.com (primary)
  • phone number ending in 1882

I performed the following checks:

  1. When I try to create the alias ******@outlook.com, Microsoft says:

"This email address is already taken."

  1. When I try to sign in using ******@outlook.com, Microsoft says:

"We couldn't find an account with that username."

  1. The alias does not appear under my account aliases.
  2. Microsoft account username recovery does not reveal any account using this address.
  3. I was successfully able to create and add ******@outlook.in as an alias on the same account.

Because of this, I am confused about the status of ******@outlook.com.

Could someone please clarify whether:

  • the address is reserved,
  • attached to a deleted account,
  • attached as an alias on another Microsoft account,
  • or if there is any recovery process available for the address?

I understand Microsoft cannot disclose ownership information. I am only trying to understand whether the address is recoverable or permanently unavailable.

Thank you.

The address ******@outlook.com is not recoverable or reusable if it is already associated with any Microsoft account (as a primary address or as an alias), or if it was previously used and then removed as an alias.

From the documented behavior:

  1. An alias cannot be added if it is already associated with another Microsoft account.
    • When trying to add an alias, if Microsoft reports “This email address is already taken,” it means the address is already in use as a Microsoft account sign-in name or alias.
    • Existing @outlook.com addresses cannot be added as aliases to another account if they are already tied to some Microsoft account.
  2. Outlook.com / Microsoft accounts and aliases cannot be merged or moved between accounts.
    • An existing Outlook.com address is already its own Microsoft account identity. Microsoft does not support merging accounts or moving an Outlook.com address from one Microsoft account to another.
  3. Removed aliases are permanently lost.
    • If an alias (including an @outlook.com address) is removed from a Microsoft account, it becomes permanently deleted and cannot be re-added or reclaimed, even to the same account.
  4. Microsoft does not recycle Outlook.com aliases.
    • Once an Outlook.com address has been used (as an account or alias) and then deleted, it is not made available again for creation or attachment to another account.

Given these rules, the most likely explanations for ******@outlook.com are:

  • It is currently attached (as primary address or alias) to some Microsoft account that is not accessible from the current sign-in, or
  • It was previously used as an alias or account and then removed, making it permanently unavailable.

In both cases, there is no recovery or reclaim process for that specific Outlook.com address. The address should be treated as permanently unavailable, even if sign-in and recovery tools do not reveal an active account.

The only supported options are:

  • Use a different Outlook.com address (for example, a variation of the desired name), or
  • Continue using another alias such as ******@outlook.in that can be successfully created and added.
