Wireless display only working for admin users

Hello,

I am currently having an issue when trying to connect from one laptop to another via wireless display. It works when the receiving user is an admin but gets stuck on a loader when on a non-admin user.
This rules out any driver issue being the cause which is what I see most online about the issue.

I have double checked its not the network, the app is allowed through the firewall, I can't see anything in the event viewer, I have reset the app.

On the sending pc I get the connection and my display goes in and out, I can choose the different display types like "Extend" or "Duplicate" and have the choice to disconnect even though the receiving laptop has nothing to show but a loader. I believe it's Miracast but I don't know what to do with that information.

Any help would be great.

Dan, I too am experiencing this problem.

We have a PC that has the Wireless Display feature and ever since around November 2025 it stopped allowing to display the connection.

It connects (the connecting user's screens say it's connected) but the icon saying about to project just spins around.

I did find that it worked with a Domain admin account (local admin, local user and domain user wouldn't work), but that no longer works either.

We have an OptiPlex 7020 with Windows 11 Enterprise and Intel GFX and Intel Wifi. But for the life of me it no longer works.

Devices are Intune connected and have the firewall rules for CastSRV and WUDFHost directories etc.

    Driving me mad!

    Hi @Dan

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your issue, this happens because Windows applies different permissions and security rules for non‑admin accounts, especially for features like Wireless Display (Miracast). Even though the driver, network, and firewall look fine, the receiving PC still needs the Wireless Display feature, projection permissions, and correct network profile to be enabled for each user profile individually.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Loosen Projecting to this PC
    • Go to Settings > System > Projecting to this PC
    • Set:
      • Available everywhere
      • Require PIN for pairing > Never
      • This PC can be discovered only when it’s plugged in > Off
      • Ask to project > First time only
      • If prompted, install Wireless Display and retry.

For more details, please refer to: Screen mirroring and projecting to your PC or wireless display

    1. Switch Wi‑Fi Network profile to Private
    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi > (Connected network)
    • Network profile > Private

For more details, please refer to: Fix connections to wireless displays or docks in Windows

Hopefully it will help work with your issue and if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
