On macOS, activation failures with a “Something went wrong” screen are commonly caused by either:
- No eligible license on the signed‑in account, or
- A local licensing/activation issue on the device.
Use these steps to narrow it down.
- Confirm the subscription type and status
- Go to
https://account.microsoft.com/services in a browser and sign in with the same Microsoft account shown on the error screen.
- Verify that the subscription is active and that it is Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (these include the desktop apps).
- If it shows Microsoft 365 Basic, that subscription does not include the right to install/activate the desktop apps; it only provides OneDrive storage and web apps. In that case, desktop apps cannot be activated with that account.
- Make sure the correct account is used in the apps
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account (or Word/Excel menu > Sign Out if already signed in).
- Sign out of all accounts listed.
- Quit all Office apps.
- Reopen Word or Excel and sign in only with the Microsoft account that has the active Personal or Family subscription.
- If the subscription is correct but activation still fails
- Completely sign out of Office as above.
- Restart the Mac.
- Open Word or Excel and try activation again.
If the account only has Microsoft 365 Basic, use the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at https://www.microsoft365.com/apps, or upgrade to a subscription that includes desktop apps.
