Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Win 11 w/ Edge. Computer locks up with a black screen "Sessions" error. I must do a hard reboot to get back to Edge. The lockup occurs while the computer is dormant or in use. I have not been able to link it to any website. It's not fussy. It's locks and sometimes requires 5 restarts. Trend Micro has worked on it for weeks with no solution.
Troubleshooting browser crashes or performance issues on Windows 11
Hi Rod Christ,
I understand how disruptive kind of issue can be when the screen goes black and the system becomes unresponsive. If you’ve tried all of Q&A Assist’s suggestions and the issue is still occurring, please try the additional recommendations below.
The next thing I’d recommend is checking whether something that starts with Windows is causing the issue. One way to do this is a clean boot, which starts Windows using only essential Microsoft services. This helps rule out whether a background app or service (such as security software or system utilities) is interfering with Windows after sign‑in. If the black screen does not occur in a clean boot state, it usually indicates that a third‑party application is involved and can be identified safely.
*Disclaimer: A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.
These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get back on track.
If the issue continues even after a clean boot, another helpful step is signing in with a new user account. In some cases, a Windows user profile can become corrupted and prevent the desktop from loading properly. If a new account works normally, this confirms the issue is limited to the original profile and can often be resolved without reinstalling Windows.

If neither of these steps resolves the problem, the next recommended option would be a Windows repair install (in‑place upgrade). This repairs core system files and drivers while keeping your apps and personal data intact, and it’s often effective for persistent black screen issues.
*Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides: How to run In-place upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Q&A
Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps and I’ll be happy to guide you through the next steps if needed.

The behavior described matches a system-level black/blank screen issue rather than an Edge-only problem. Use the following steps to narrow it down and stabilize Windows 11; once the OS is stable, Edge issues usually disappear as well.
explorer.exe).explorer.exe or userinit.exe around the time of the black screen. That indicates the shell is crashing and may require deeper troubleshooting as described in the scenario guide. If none of the above resolves the black screen/lockup and it continues across multiple reboots, use Windows 11 recovery options (such as a repair install or Reset this PC while keeping files) as a last resort to repair core system components.
