There are several different “Copilot” experiences, and removal/turn‑off depends on where it appears. Use the option that matches what is being used.

    1. If this is the Copilot app on Windows 10 or 11
    • Windows 11:
      1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      2. Search for Copilot.
      3. Select the (More options) next to Copilot, then select Uninstall.
    • Windows 10:
      1. Open Settings > Apps.
      2. Search for Copilot.
      3. Select Copilot, then select Uninstall.
    • If managing multiple devices as an admin, Copilot can also be removed or blocked via PowerShell or AppLocker as described in Remove or prevent installation of the Microsoft Copilot app.
    1. If this is Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote (Microsoft 365 apps) Copilot can be turned off per app and per device using the Enable Copilot checkbox.
    • In each desktop app (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) on Windows or Mac:
      1. Open the app.
      2. Go to the Copilot settings area and clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
      3. Repeat in every app where Copilot should be disabled and on every device where those apps are used.

When Enable Copilot is cleared, the Copilot icon on the ribbon is disabled and Copilot features in that app stop working.

If the checkbox is not visible yet, the app version may be older than the versions listed in the article; updating the Microsoft 365 apps is required before the checkbox appears.

    1. If this is the new in‑document Copilot icon in Word Some recent Word builds showed an in‑document Copilot logo even when Copilot was disabled. The moderator guidance indicates that updating to build 16.103.1 removes that intrusive logo:
    • Switch to Current Channel (Preview) if available, then update Office until at least 16.103.1 is installed.
    • After that update, the in‑document Copilot logo should no longer appear.
    1. If Copilot is still visible but dimmed If Copilot has been disabled via Enable Copilot, the icon may remain on the ribbon but will be dimmed and inactive. To hide the icon itself from the ribbon (without changing Copilot’s on/off state), customize the ribbon and remove the Copilot button from the tab layout.
    2. If Copilot is managed by an organization If this is a work or school device, Copilot may be deployed and controlled by IT. In that case, an administrator can:
    • Uninstall the Copilot app via Settings > Apps > Installed apps; or
    • Use AppLocker or the documented PowerShell method to remove or block the Copilot app across devices.
