Hello everyone,

I am facing a critical issue with my account and am desperately looking for advice or help from the community and Microsoft agents.

A few days ago, I was trying to resolve a security issue because I kept receiving persistent two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, even though I had already changed my password and revoked all trusted devices. I read in the documentation that changing the primary alias could help secure the account.

Unfortunately, I misunderstood how the interface worked and made a massive mistake: I accidentally deleted my old primary email address (%samplename%@outlook.com), which I have actively used for the last 20 years. Now, when I try to add it back, I get the following error: "We limit how frequently you can add aliases to your account. Please try again later."

I contacted Microsoft Chat Support, and the agent informed me that:

The frequency limit will lift in a few days.

However, they claimed that since the @outlook.com alias was deleted, it is gone forever, blocked by the system, and cannot be recreated or recovered.

I am absolutely devastated. This email address is tied to all my important services, banking, work, and personal contacts from the last two decades. It was an honest mistake caused by a confusing UI flow while trying to secure my account.

Is this email truly lost forever? Is there a holding/recycling period after which I might be able to add this exact address back to my current account? Can an escalated technical support team intervene in extreme cases like this?

    Hello,

    I have some good news for you, which is not documented anywhere/updated in Microsoft's alias document yet.

    The good news is, as long as you have another alias to sign into the "same" Microsoft account, you can get this outlook.com email address added back. This is some very new change Microsoft quietly made possible, but they haven't updated any of their documents. Remember, two key things -

    1. You must have another alias to log into the account.
    2. It must be the same Microsoft account. You cannot use the outlook.com address to create another Microsoft account.

    So, wait out 7 days, because you can only change alias twice every 7 days. Once the wait is over. Use the Add alias > "Create new" option, then put in the same outlook address. It will let you add.
