Word documents close

Question

A text box says that Word has encountered a problem. It asks whether it should be repaired now, to which I agree. Nothing seems to happen and the Word Documents keep closing of their own accord.

Instead, exit all Office apps and run an Online Repair; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application.

Before you begin, make sure that you can access your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it. That way, you know that you can reinstall Office, which is usually the final step of an Online Repair.

Run a full Online Repair of Office, as the built‑in “Repair now” prompt is not fixing the issue.

Follow these steps on Windows:

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to System (or Apps) > Apps (or Installed apps).
3. Find Microsoft Office (or Microsoft 365 Apps) in the list.
4. Select it, choose Modify.
5. Select Online Repair, then choose Repair and let it complete.

If Word and other Office apps still close unexpectedly after the Online Repair, completely uninstall Office from Apps & Features/Installed apps, restart the PC (full restart, not shutdown), then reinstall Office from the Microsoft account where the subscription or license is registered.
