I am the owner of a Microsoft 365 Developer Program tenant.

Tenant domain: [Moderator note: personal info removed]

Admin user: [Moderator note: personal info removed]

I lost access to Microsoft Authenticator due to losing my device.

I do not have any alternative MFA methods configured.

There are no other global administrators in the tenant.

I still have access to my Developer Program account [Moderator note: personal info removed], which is linked to this tenant.

I need an MFA reset for the admin account to regain access.

    Dear Thiago Silva

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

First, I recommend reviewing the AI‑generated response on your post, as it aligns closely with my own understanding of the issue.

In addition, I’d like to highlight that the trial subscription is valid for 30 days. Before it expires, please remember to cancel the trial in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to avoid any charges. You can follow the instructions in this guide: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.
Please also note that this process may take longer than usual (approximately 7–14 working days), as the Data Protection team is currently handling a high volume of requests. As a forum moderator, I do not have access to Microsoft internal systems and am unable to expedite this process.

Because the only global administrator on the tenant is locked out by MFA and there are no alternative methods configured, the MFA reset must be handled by Microsoft’s data protection/tenant recovery process. This cannot be done through the Developer Program dashboard alone.

    Use these steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft support by phone
      • Go to the global customer service numbers: global support phone numbers.
      • Call the number for the region and clearly state:
        • This is a Microsoft 365 business/Developer Program tenant.
        • The tenant domain.
        • That this is a work/school/company account, not personal.
        • That the only global admin has lost access to Microsoft Authenticator, has no alternative MFA methods, and cannot sign in to the admin portal to open a ticket.
        • That an MFA reset / authentication method reset is needed for the global admin and that the case must be routed to the Microsoft 365 Data Protection team / Tenant Recovery team.
Typical IVR flow (may vary by country) as described in the guidance:
    • When asked what the problem is: say “Authenticator”.
    • Product type: “Office 365 for business” or “Microsoft 365 for business”.
    • Account type: “Company account”.
    • Are you an administrator: “Yes”.
    • Any other admins: “No, I am the only global admin”.
    • Request: “I need to create a service request and be transferred to the Data Protection team to reset my MFA / authentication methods.” Be prepared to provide identity and tenant ownership proof as requested (for example, business/domain information or other verification the agent asks for).
    1. If phone support is hard to reach, use a temporary tenant to open a ticket
      • If unable to get to a live agent, create a new temporary Microsoft 365 tenant via a trial subscription.
      • From that new tenant’s admin center, open a support request explicitly stating it is for tenant recovery / MFA reset on the original Developer Program tenant, and that the only global admin is locked out by MFA.
      • Ask support to escalate to the Microsoft 365 Data Protection team for the original tenant.
    2. Do not create duplicate tenants for ongoing use
      • Any new trial tenant is only a vehicle to reach support; the MFA reset and recovery must be performed on the original Developer Program tenant.

Self-service options (password reset, normal MFA reset from Entra ID, or using the Developer Program dashboard) are not sufficient in this scenario because:

    • There is no second global admin to reset MFA.
    • No alternative MFA methods are configured.
    • The admin cannot sign in to the admin portals to perform a reset or open a ticket.

Therefore, working with Microsoft support and the Data Protection team is the required path to have MFA cleared and regain access to the admin account.
