I cannot get away from a bitlocker screen. My screen continues to default back for a recovery key request

Have you tried a hard reset?

Turn off the laptop.

Unplug the charger.

Remove all USB devices.

If the battery is removable → remove the battery.

Press and hold the Power button for 30–60 seconds.

Reinsert the battery (if removed).

Plug in the charger.

Turn the laptop on.

If you are still seeing the BitLocker Recovery screen, follow the steps below;

Sign in to your Microsoft account using another device.

Go to the main menu and select Devices.

Locate the device that is causing the issue, then click See details.

Scroll down and choose Manage recovery keys.

For security verification, a code will be sent to your email. Enter the code when prompted. After verification, you will be able to view your BitLocker recovery key.

When the BitLocker recovery screen keeps appearing, Windows is detecting a condition where it will not automatically unlock the drive and requires the BitLocker recovery key every time.

To move past the screen, the recovery key must be entered correctly:

1. On the blue BitLocker recovery screen, type the full 48‑digit BitLocker recovery key (hyphens are optional).
2. If the key is correct, the device will start into Windows.

If the recovery key is not available or is not accepted, use these options from the provided guidance:

• Locate the recovery key using the methods in Find your BitLocker recovery key (for example, Microsoft account, work/school account, printout, USB file, or Azure AD/Active Directory if managed by an organization).
• If the key truly cannot be found in any of those locations, BitLocker protection cannot be bypassed by Microsoft or anyone else. In that case, the only way forward is to reset or clean‑install Windows, which will result in loss of the encrypted data on that drive.
• If performing a clean install from a bootable Windows USB, boot from the USB in BIOS/UEFI and choose a custom install. Delete all partitions until there is one unallocated space, then install Windows there. In this scenario, the BitLocker key is not required, but all existing data on the drive will be erased.

If the device is managed by a work or school, contact the organization’s IT support to retrieve the recovery key from their management systems.
