Extending the MFA frequency past 90 days in Microsoft 365 Business Account.

I have been trying to extend the MFA frequency on our Microsoft 365 Business account. We have a mix of Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Microsoft 365 App for Business and Microsoft 356 E1 licenses; we have a total of 324 licenses so we added 365 E1 licenses after we hit the 300 limit in the other category.

I am trying to change MFA frequency to 180 days. https://entra.microsoft.com/#view/Microsoft_AAD_IAM/MultifactorAuthenticationConfig.ReactView/tabId/users shows I can choose between 1-365 days. If I try to enter a number greater than 90 I get an error message that says, "The value must be between 1 and 90."

I would be grateful for any tips the community can offer.

Yesterday I added a Microsoft 365 Business Premium license and assigned it to myself. I was able to follow the steps you provided. Apparently the URL I included, in my original question, was the legacy MFA page. I am glad I didn't have to convert all of our licenses to Microsoft 365 Business Premium. It would have been useful for Microsoft to include this detail in their instructions. I will learn if this was all that was required soon if users stop asking for assistance with MFA for several weeks.

    Hello Martin,

Thank you, the reply and the details.

To be able to increase authentication frequency to a higher number it is recommended to use Conditional Access sign-in frequency in session control.

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least a Conditional Access Administrator.
    2. Browse to Protection > Conditional Access > Policies.
    3. Select policy.
    4. Under users include all users that will need to use the MFA
    5. Under Grant check mark the Require multifactor authentication to enable MFA on users
    6. Under Access controls > Session Select Sign-in frequency and Choose Periodic reauthentication and enter a value of days

In regard to the particular page you shared with us it seems to a bug in numbers shown in the admin center, it is recommended to report it directly to our Microsoft product development team submitting feedback admin center. the product development team continuedly review feedback submitted by user to identify bugs and suggestions for user to develop new features.

I am including screenshots of the Pre-User Authentication Page - one shows 90 beings accepted and the other shows I can't go higher than 90. When I follow the process you outlined I see two places I can click on "Protection"; neither option offers "Conditional Access". I am including a screenshot of both options expanded. I am also including a screenshot of the products we subscribe to. My fear is that we will be forced to upgrade our subscription to Microsoft 365 Business Premium to make this simple adjustment to our MFA frequency. I welcome any feedback or suggestions. Hi Martin Capehart,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community. We are happy to assist.

I understand you are having issue while changing the MFA frequency. To fully understand the scenario, I would like to ask some questions to narrow down the situation and work toward the resolution.

Could you shared with us the screenshot to show the page you are using to change the MFA frequency and the error message?

May I know if the MFA is configured using conditional access policies?

If the MFA is configured using the conditional access policy, you can change the session control setting and the configure the sign in frequency to 180days

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least a Conditional Access Administrator.
    2. Browse to Protection > Conditional Access > Policies.
    3. Select policy.
    4. Under Access controls > Session.
      1. Select Sign-in frequency and Choose Periodic reauthentication and enter a value of days
    5. Save your policy.

Please note that my initial response may not address your current situation immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a direction specific to your current situation.

I look forward to your next update. Thank you so much for your precious time. stay safe and healthy
