Unable to "unsave" Microsoft Teams 1:1 chat message

Howdy,

I was looking to get some advice on an odd issue that we are running into where a user is unable to "unsave" a saved 1:1 chat message. The user is able to save/unsave any other chat messages, there is just a single problematic message that cannot be unsaved. So far, we have tried to do following with no success.

  • Sign-out of and then back into the Microsoft Teams desktop app.
  • Update the Microsoft Teams desktop app.
  • Clear the cache of the Microsoft Teams desktop app by deleting the app data folder.
  • Try to use the Microsoft web app to unsave the message.

The user also has all of the same Team's policies applied to their account as all of our other users, and this specific message would not have any special retention policies applied to it (I don't think retention would impact saving).

I was thinking that we could try and delete the message, but deleting a message does not automatically unsave it, so I was not sure if that would help or hurt in this case, as I don't want them to end up with a permanently saved message that is also deleted.

If anyone has any ideas on anything we could check or try to get this message unsaved, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @Chris LeMay,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your sharing, this is quite an unexpected behavior since the issue only happened with one specific chat and the others still work properly.

For you receiving the best suggestion and guidance for this issue, I highly suggest reaching out directly to Microsoft Support for deeper troubleshooting and resolution. Your IT admin can create a support ticket by sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center following steps from this link: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn to raise a support ticket from admin center or calling the phone support to contact Microsoft Support: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

This route ensures that a Microsoft support engineer can initiate a remote session to investigate backend configurations, run advanced diagnostic tools, and, if necessary, escalate the case to specialized teams with access to internal systems and logs. These backend resources are essential for resolving issues that go beyond what’s visible in the user interface.

Also, you can look for the way to find your admin through this link: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.

Note: I appreciate your understanding regarding the scope of support available through this forum. As moderators, my role is to provide general guidance and assist with common troubleshooting steps. While I do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, but I’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of my responsibilities.

I hope this helps you move forward smoothly. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out again and I’ll be happy to continue assisting you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Looking forward to your response.

It seems like you've already taken several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue of being unable to "unsave" a specific 1:1 chat message in Microsoft Teams. Since the problem persists despite signing out, updating the app, clearing the cache, and trying the web app, here are a few additional suggestions:

    1. Check for App Updates: Ensure that the Microsoft Teams app is fully updated, as sometimes issues can arise from using an outdated version.
    2. Test on Another Device: If possible, have the user try accessing their Teams account from a different device to see if the issue is device-specific.
    3. Contact IT Support: If your organization has IT support, they may have additional tools or insights into whether there are any backend issues affecting this specific message.
    4. Check Message Properties: While you mentioned that retention policies should not affect saving, it might be worth checking if there are any unusual properties associated with that specific message that could be causing the issue.
    5. Delete and Recreate the Conversation: If the message is not critical, consider deleting the entire chat thread and starting a new one. This could potentially reset any issues tied to that specific message.
    6. Feedback to Microsoft: If the issue remains unresolved, consider submitting feedback to Microsoft through the Teams app. They may be able to provide further assistance or address the issue in future updates.

Deleting the message may not automatically unsave it, and it could lead to complications if the message is still retained in some form. Proceed with caution if you choose to go that route.
