We see many reports in the forum that Repair Now fails to fix these types of problems.

Instead, exit all Office apps and run an Online Repair from Windows Settings. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b .

    Dear @Simone Dabas,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you're having an issue opening your document. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

Based on what you’ve described, when Word prompts for a repair that fails to execute, it’s often due to a conflict between the application's launch sequence and your computer’s security settings. The “Repair now” option typically only addresses surface-level issues, which is why it may not resolve the deeper corruption in the Office installation or file-level blocks. The "Unlock" message you encountered suggests that Windows might be treating the document as a potential security risk.

Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot:

    1.Unblock the Document

If the file was downloaded from an email or a web source, Windows may have "locked" it to protect your system.

    • Right-click on the Word document icon and select Properties.
    • Look at the bottom of the General tab for a section labeled Security.
    • Check the box that says Unblock and click Apply.
    • Try opening the document again.

    2.Launch Word in Safe Mode

To determine if the problem is caused by a faulty add-in or a issue with your settings, try bypassing them entirely.

    1. Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard.
    2. Type winword /safe and press Enter.
    3. If Word opens successfully in this mode, go to File > Open and browse for your document.
    4. If it opens now, the problem is likely a corrupted add-in
    5. To fix this, go to File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins > Go... > disable all add in > OK
    6. Restart Word and try opening the document again. If it opens, re-enable the add-ins one by one to identify the faulty one.

    3.Perform an "Online Repair"

    1. Right-click the Start button and select Installed Apps
    2. Find Microsoft 365 Office in the list.
    3. Click the three dots (...) and choose Modify.
    4. Select Online Repair. This will re-download the core components of Office, providing a more thorough repair than the "Quick Repair" option.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments so I can continue to support you. I'm looking forward to your reply.

If you're unable to open your Word document and the repair option doesn't work, you can try the following steps:

    1. Run an Online Repair: Exit all Office applications and perform an Online Repair. This is more thorough than the quick repair option. You can do this by going to the Settings app, selecting Apps, finding Microsoft Office, and choosing Modify to start the Online Repair.
    2. Manually Access and Repair the Document: Start Word, go to the File tab, select Open > Browse, locate your document, and choose the Open and Repair option from the Open menu.
    3. Check for Disk Space: Ensure that your hard drive has enough space. If it's full, you might not be able to open or save files. Use Disk Cleanup to free up space.
    4. Rename the File or Move It: Sometimes, reducing the character count of the file name or moving the file to a folder with a shorter path can help.
    5. Change File Format: If the document is damaged, try saving it in a different format (like Rich Text Format) and then open it again to save it back to Word format.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to reinstall Office after uninstalling it completely.
