    Hi,

It depends on which key you have – is it an FPP or OEM key?

Did you buy the key separately, or are you referring to the key that came with the computer if you bought a pre-built one like a Dell, HP, or Lenovo?

    Thanks

On Windows 11, the original product key depends on how Windows was obtained:

    1. If Windows 11 came preinstalled on the PC (OEM)
      • The product key is usually embedded in the device firmware (BIOS/UEFI) and not lost when changing it in Settings.
      • Windows can typically reactivate automatically from this embedded key when reinstalling or using the correct edition.
      • If activation fails and no key is visible in documentation, contact the PC manufacturer for help confirming the original key or license.
    2. If Windows 11/10 was bought separately (retail or digital)
      • Check where it was purchased:
        • Boxed copy: key is on the label/card inside the box.
        • Digital copy from a retailer: key is in the confirmation email or the retailer’s “digital locker.”
        • Digital copy from Microsoft Store/website: key or digital license info is in the confirmation email and in the Microsoft account order history.
      • If a free upgrade to Windows 10/11 was used, the device normally has a digital license instead of a reusable product key. Signing in with the same Microsoft account used before should reactivate it.
    3. If a digital license is linked to a Microsoft account
      • Ensure sign‑in on this device with the same Microsoft account previously used.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation and check if Windows shows as activated with a digital license.
      • If activation fails after hardware changes, use Troubleshoot on the Activation page and follow the reactivation flow described in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

If none of these methods provide the original key and there is no digital license associated with the Microsoft account, a new Windows license or product key is required to activate Windows again.
