    Hi @Mark O'Connell

Based on the information you provided, I understand that after performing a routine system update and shutting down your laptop last night, your Classic Outlook desktop application will no longer open today.

This behavior can sometimes occur under certain conditions following a system update. It may be related to configuration or synchronization behavior between the newly updated operating system files and the Outlook client.

Let's walk through a few simple checks that often help resolve this type of situation. Please try these steps first:

Outlook for Windows not responding, hangs, freezes, or stops working

Classic Outlook crashes and opens in Safe Mode starting March 12 2026

To help me provide the best possible support if the behavior continues after trying the steps above, could you please send me more details in Private Messages?

-Could you confirm what type of email account you are using (for example, Microsoft Exchange, POP, or IMAP)?

-When you attempt to open Classic Outlook, do you see any specific error messages or codes on the screen, or does the loading screen simply appear and then close?

Please run through the initial troubleshooting steps and let me know the results. If Outlook still does not open, please send the requested details via private message so we can investigate further.

Try these steps in order, checking Outlook after each step:

    1. End any stuck Outlook/Office processes
      1. Right‑click the Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
      2. On the Processes tab, find Outlook and any other Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.).
      3. Select each one and choose End task.
      4. Try opening Outlook again.
    2. Start Outlook in Safe Mode (to rule out add‑ins)
      1. Press Windows key + R.
      2. Type Outlook /safe and select OK.
      3. If prompted, accept the default profile and sign in.
      4. If Outlook opens in Safe Mode, disable add‑ins:
        • Go to File > Options > Add‑ins.
        • At the bottom, ensure Manage: COM Add‑ins is selected, then choose Go.
        • Clear all check boxes to disable add‑ins and select OK.
        • Close Outlook and reopen it normally.
    3. Create and test with a new Outlook profile If Outlook still will not start (even in Safe Mode), the profile may be corrupted.
      1. Follow the steps in Create an Outlook profile here: Create an Outlook profile.
      2. After creating the new profile, restart Outlook.
      3. In the Choose Profile dialog, select the new profile and choose OK.
      4. If Outlook starts normally with the new profile, the old profile is corrupt. Before removing it, back up any local data files (.pst) because cached content is deleted when a profile is removed.
    4. Repair Outlook data files if prompted about data issues If Outlook shows a message that something is wrong with a data file or prompts to run the Inbox Repair Tool, follow the guidance in Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) using scanpst.exe as described here: Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost).

If the problem started immediately after a Windows update and you use a POP account, and Outlook is freezing or hanging, check for and install any newer Windows updates that may contain a fix, or consult guidance on the specific KB update affecting Outlook POP profiles.
