I am trying to do a video on a lenovo laptop with the camera. It takes the video but there is no sound on replay. It shows the volume is on. Th sound works for when I watch a movie or sports event, music etc. I did a video several months ago and the sound was fine. I have not changed anything in settings. I have gone thru the settings but don't even see an option for camera sound. I have had updates but not sure what they did, I didn't notice any problems until today.

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for posting your question here! This is a common post update issue. Let me help you on this.

Kindly do these step by step:

Step 1 Check microphone is active

  • Start Settings System Sound
  • Under Input Select the correct microphone built in or external Talk and confirm the blue bar moves
  • If no movement Mic is muted disabled or wrong device selected

Step 2 Check Camera app permission

  • Settings Privacy and Security Microphone
  • Turn Microphone access On Turn Let apps access your microphone On
  • Scroll down Make sure Camera is allowed

Step 3 Check Volume mixer

  • Settings System Sound Volume mixer
  • Make sure System volume is up Camera app is not muted Camera volume slider is up

Step 4 Confirm default input

  • Settings System Sound
  • Under Input Select the mic you want to use This sets it as the default for Camera

Step 5 Turn off audio enhancements

  • Sometimes updates break mic audio
  • Settings System Sound
  • Under Input Select the microphone Turn Audio enhancements Off if present
  • Do the same under Output for speakers

Step 6 Update or reset audio driver

If this started after updates this matters.

  • Press Win + X Device Manager
  • Expand Sound video and game controllers
  • Right click your audio device Select Update driver Search automatically
  • Restart and test
  • If still no sound Right click audio device again Select Uninstall device Check remove driver if available Restart
  • Windows will reinstall a clean driver

Step 7 Test with another app

  • Open Voice Recorder Record 5 seconds. If Voice Recorder works, the issue is Camera app only

Follow these steps in Windows 11 to restore sound when recording video with the camera app:

    1. Confirm Windows sound works
    • Since sound works for movies and music, output is fine. Keep using the same speakers/headphones while testing recordings.
    1. Check input (microphone) is enabled and not muted
    1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Under Input, make sure a working microphone (built‑in or external) is selected.
    3. Speak into the mic and check the input level meter moves.
    4. If the input device is muted or disabled, enable it and raise its volume.
    1. Check Volume mixer for the Camera app
    1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Select Volume mixer.
    3. Make sure:
      • System volume is up.
      • The Camera (or recording app) is not muted and its volume slider is turned up.
    1. Verify the correct default input device
    1. In Settings > System > Sound, under Input, select the microphone that should be used.
    2. This sets it as the default input device for apps like Camera.
    1. Turn off audio enhancements on the input/output device Sometimes enhancements interfere with recording/playback.
    1. In Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Under Output, select the playback device and turn Audio enhancements off.
    3. Under Input, select the microphone and turn any enhancements off if available.
    1. Update or reinstall the audio driver If the issue started after an update, the audio driver may be corrupted.
    1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right‑click the audio device (for example, Realtek or High Definition Audio) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    4. Restart the PC and test recording.
    5. If it still fails, in Device Manager, right‑click the audio device again, select Uninstall device, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then Uninstall and restart. Windows will reinstall a generic audio driver.
    1. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
    1. Open the Get Help app and run the audio troubleshooter from the sound article: Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.
    2. Let it detect and fix any microphone/input issues, then test a new camera recording.

If recordings still have no sound after these steps, test with another app (for example, a browser-based recorder or another camera app). If other apps also record without sound, the issue is almost certainly with the microphone/driver configuration and repeating steps 2, 4, and 6 focusing on the correct input device is recommended.
