Teams meeting didn't process my second recording, best next steps?

Hello, I hosted a training on teams yesterday a few people showed up over 30 mins early so I hopped in to remind them that we had a time change which made the recording start extremely early. I didn't want an extra 30-45 min on the recording of nothing happening, so I ended the recording and restarted it manually at the correct time. it's been nearly 24 hours, and the first short recording has been ready but the full meeting recording that I actually need hasn't shown up. I checked OneDrive and the meeting chat and all I can find is the short recording the chat shows the start and stop for the full meeting recording. Have I just not waited long enough? it should be about 45 minutes long if that makes a difference.

    Dear @Schmidt, Julia,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that Teams successfully processed your first short recording, but the second and main recording from your training session has not appeared in the meeting chat, OneDrive, or the meeting recap. You manually stopped and restarted the recording to avoid capturing 30–45 minutes of downtime, but nearly 24 hours later the primary 45‑minute recording still hasn’t shown up even though the meeting chat displays both the start and stop events. You’re trying to determine whether more processing time is needed or if Teams may have failed to generate the final recording.

When this happens, it usually means the recording either failed to upload or encountered an issue during processing.

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:

    • Wait a little longer: While most recordings process quickly, occasionally a meeting may take longer than 24 hours.
    • Check if you were the meeting organizer or recording owner: Only the organizer or the person who pressed “Record” will get the file in their OneDrive
    • Ask another participant to see if they could see the recording

If none of the above helps and the recording still isn’t appearing, then it’s likely that Teams encountered a processing error, and unfortunately the recording may not have been successfully saved.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.

The second recording should normally appear in the meeting chat and in the organizer’s OneDrive/SharePoint shortly after the meeting finishes. If it has not appeared by now and cannot be found in storage or recycle bins, it is very likely not recoverable.

Use these concrete checks and next steps:

    1. Verify that the second recording actually started
      • In the meeting chat, look for the automatic system message that indicates recording started at the later, correct time.
      • Recording only begins after selecting More options > Start recording and then confirming in the dialog. If there is no “recording started” message for that second attempt, the recording never began and no file was created.
    2. Check the correct storage location directly
      • For a private/non-channel meeting, the recording is stored in the meeting organizer’s OneDrive in the Recordings folder.
      • For a channel meeting, it is stored in the team’s SharePoint document library.
      • Open OneDrive or SharePoint directly (not just via Teams) and look for a file with the correct date/time and meeting name. If only the short, first recording exists, the longer one was not saved.
    3. Look for upload/processing failure indicators in chat
      • When a recording fails to upload to OneDrive/SharePoint, Teams shows a special recording item in the chat indicating it is stored temporarily (for 21 days) and offers options to retry upload or download locally.
      • If the chat only shows the start/stop text messages but no recording file or temporary-storage message for the second recording, then either the recording never completed or no file was generated.
    4. Check for deletion or expiration
      • If the longer recording did exist and was later deleted or expired, it may be in the OneDrive/SharePoint recycle bin or second-stage recycle bin. Check both levels for a file matching the meeting name and date.
      • If it is not present in the main location or either recycle bin, it cannot be recovered.
    5. Prevent loss for future recordings
      • Once a recording is found, open it in Stream, switch to Editing mode, select the expiration countdown under the video, and extend or remove the expiration so it is not auto-deleted.

    Given that:

    • The short, first recording is available,
    • The second, longer recording does not appear in chat as a playable file or temporary-storage item, and
    • It is not visible in OneDrive/SharePoint,

then the most probable outcome is that the second recording either never successfully started (despite the intent to restart it) or failed in a way that did not produce a recoverable file. In that case, waiting longer will not make it appear, and it cannot be retrieved.
