If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker and you are now blocked by a blue Bitlocker Recovery Key screen and cannot get into Windows, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

    https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

If you are unable to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used on that device, then I am sorry for the bad news, a Windows reset will not work on an encrypted drive, the only way to access that device is to create a bootable Windows 11 USB on another working PC and use that to clean install Windows and at the start of the installation, delete all partitions on the drive to remove the encryption, which will sadly result in loss of all data on the drive.

BitLocker encryption cannot be removed or bypassed without the correct BitLocker recovery key or password.

For a PC that was bought and where the BitLocker recovery key was not stored or is now forgotten, only these options exist:

    1. Try to find the BitLocker recovery key
Check all locations where the key might have been saved when BitLocker was first enabled:
      • The Microsoft account used on the device: sign in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com, go to Devices, select the device, then choose View BitLocker Keys (for Microsoft Entra ID–backed keys).
      • Any printed copy or text file backup that might have been saved to a USB drive or another computer.
      • If the device was ever joined to a work or school domain, contact the organization’s IT/helpdesk; they may have the key in Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID.
    2. If the key truly cannot be found
BitLocker is designed so that data cannot be accessed without the recovery key. Neither Microsoft nor anyone else can unlock the drive or remove BitLocker without it. The only remaining option is to:
      • Perform a clean installation of Windows from bootable installation media (USB) and delete all existing partitions during setup. This removes BitLocker by erasing the encrypted data and recreating the drive, but all existing files on the drive will be lost.

There is no tool that can “remove” BitLocker while keeping access to the data if the recovery key/password is unavailable.
