ello Microsoft Support Team,

We received an official notification stating that our organization’s Microsoft 365

subscription will be deactivated on April 16, 2026 at 12:43:01 UTC due to an alleged

violation of the Microsoft Acceptable Use Policy (Product Terms).

Tenant:

Primary admin account:

[Moderator note: personal info removed]

According to the notice, all SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business content will

be blocked at the service level.

We believe this action may have been triggered in error and we respectfully request:

  1. A detailed review of the tenant activity that led to this Acceptable Use Policy flag.
  2. Clarification on which service, workload, or activity was identified as non-compliant.
  3. Confirmation of the current subscription state (Active / Restricted / Read-Only / Disabled).
  4. Guidance on whether remediation is possible to prevent deactivation.
  5. If deactivation cannot be reversed, clarification on options for administrative access

or data export prior to permanent data loss.

Context:

  • This tenant is used for legitimate organizational purposes.
  • No intentional misuse, spam activity, malware hosting, or prohibited content is known

to have been performed by our administrators or users.

  • The impact of deactivation would be critical due to reliance on SharePoint and OneDrive

  data.

We kindly request escalation to the appropriate compliance or trust and safety team if

needed.

Thank you for your assistance. We are available to provide any additional information

required to support the investigation.

Best regards,

[Moderator note: personal info removed]

    Hi @THYAGO,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the notification indicating that the Microsoft 365 subscription is scheduled for deactivation due to an alleged Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) violation.

This situation is understandably concerning, and the following information should help clarify what the notice means and how to proceed.

Based on similar cases in the forum, this type of notification is generated when Microsoft’s internal compliance and trust systems flag tenant‑level activity that may potentially violate the Microsoft Online Services Acceptable Use Policy. When this occurs, restrictions such as SharePoint Online and OneDrive being placed into a read‑only or blocked state are enforced directly at the service level by Microsoft. These restrictions are not caused by tenant configuration, licensing assignment, or storage limits.

To request a review, the following actions are strongly recommended:

Create a support request in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center

    • Sign in with a Global or Billing Administrator account and navigate to:
    • Support -> Help and Support
    • User's image
    • Type Acceptable use policy in the terms of use error in support search bar -Send, then click on the 'Contact support':

    • Then select a contact method:
      • Choose Phone or Email, filled the upcoming form and then wait.

For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

Once an AUP deactivation notice is issued, Microsoft typically enforces strict timelines. Submitting the support request as soon as possible is critical to allow sufficient time for investigation and response.

Additionally, I have opened a private message for you. Once you have successfully created the ticket, please share the ticket number with me there. This will allow me to track the status of your request on my side and provide further guidance as needed.

I hope this guidance helps move things forward toward a quick resolution. Please feel free to reach out again if you need further assistance.

As other users may also search for information in this community, your vote and accepting answer can greatly help those with similar questions quickly find the most relevant resources.

Thank you for your kindness and I wish you a wonderful day ahead.

Use the following steps and wording as a template to handle this situation with Microsoft:

    1. Confirm what the notification means

The banner and notice that the subscription will be deactivated and that all SharePoint and OneDrive content will be blocked indicates that Microsoft has flagged the tenant for a violation of the Microsoft Online Services Acceptable Use Policy. When this happens, SharePoint/OneDrive can be placed into a restricted or read‑only state at the service (farm) level, and the subscription can be scheduled for deactivation.

This is consistent with the documented behavior where:

    • Access to SharePoint/OneDrive can be blocked due to an Acceptable Use Policy violation.
    • If the subscription is later deactivated or ends, data and access follow the normal subscription lifecycle (Expired → Disabled → Deleted) unless the subscription is explicitly deleted.
    1. Open and escalate a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin center

Because Acceptable Use Policy enforcement is handled by Microsoft, only Microsoft Support and internal compliance/back‑end teams can:

    • Review what triggered the AUP flag.
    • Confirm the current subscription and service state.
    • Decide whether restrictions and scheduled deactivation can be reversed.

    Action:

    • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with a global or billing admin account.
    • Go to the SharePoint Acceptable Use Policy page and select Contact support to open a support request specifically for this scenario.
    • In the ticket, include:
      • Tenant name (for example, [Moderator note: personal info removed]).
      • Date/time of the deactivation notice.
      • Exact wording of the banner or email.
      • Confirmation that the tenant is used for legitimate organizational purposes and that no known prohibited activity has occurred.
      • A request for escalation to the internal compliance/trust & safety or back‑end team.

This aligns with the documented guidance: if the organization is not involved in prohibited activities, a support request must be submitted to restore access.

    1. Ask Microsoft Support for the specific clarifications

In the support case, explicitly request the following (you can adapt this wording):

    1. A detailed review of tenant activity that led to the Acceptable Use Policy flag.
    2. Clarification on which service, workload, or activity was identified as non‑compliant.
    3. Confirmation of the current subscription state (Active / Expired / Disabled) and any additional AUP‑related restriction state (for example, SharePoint/OneDrive read‑only or blocked).
    4. Guidance on whether remediation is possible to prevent the scheduled deactivation and how to demonstrate compliance.
    5. If deactivation cannot be reversed, confirmation of:
      • How long admin‑only access to data will remain available.
      • The exact timeline before data is deleted.
      • What export options are available for SharePoint and OneDrive data.
    6. Understand data and access timelines if deactivation proceeds

If Microsoft does not reverse the AUP decision and the subscription is deactivated or ends, the standard Microsoft 365 subscription lifecycle and data retention rules apply unless the subscription is explicitly deleted:

    • Expired status:
      • Users: still have normal access to Microsoft 365, files, and apps.
      • Admins: can access the admin center.
    • Disabled status:
      • Users: cannot access apps; apps move into read‑only, reduced functionality mode and show unlicensed product notifications.
      • Admins: can still access the admin center but cannot assign licenses.
    • Deleted status:
      • Users: cannot access Microsoft 365, files, or apps.
      • Customer data: deleted and Microsoft Entra ID removed if not used by other services.

    Data retention:

    • After a paid subscription ends or is terminated, customer data is retained in a limited‑function account for up to 90 days to allow data extraction.
    • No more than 180 days after expiration or termination, Microsoft disables the account and deletes all customer data; after this, data is commercially unrecoverable.

    Important:

    • If a subscription is explicitly deleted (for example, by an admin), it skips Expired and Disabled and SharePoint/OneDrive content is deleted immediately.
    1. Plan for data backup and export

While the support case is under review, prepare for the possibility that deactivation will proceed:

    • Ensure global/billing admins can still sign in to the admin center.
    • Plan to back up critical SharePoint and OneDrive data before any explicit deletion or before the end of the retention window.
    • If the subscription is moved to Disabled, admins can still access and back up data while in that state.
    1. If access is already restricted (read‑only)

If SharePoint/OneDrive are already read‑only due to the AUP enforcement:

    • Document the behavior with screenshots (for example, “This site is read only at the farm administrator’s request”).
    • Provide these screenshots and any relevant logs to Microsoft Support when requested.
    • Be prepared for the case to be escalated to an internal back‑end/compliance team; response may take some time.
    1. Do not delete the subscription

Until Microsoft Support confirms the outcome and data‑export options:

    • Do not explicitly delete the subscription in the admin center, because that would:
      • Skip the Expired and Disabled stages.
      • Immediately delete SharePoint Online and OneDrive content.

Instead, rely on the normal lifecycle and retention periods while working with Support to resolve or, if necessary, to export data.
