I have interviews next week and need to make sure my video is working, can someone go through that with me to make sure it's working and I'm ready to go?

    hi Lisa Gemma,
Yes — before the interview, you can test everything yourself quite easily.

    A quick checklist:

    • Open the app you’ll use for the interview (Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.)
    • Go to:
      • Settings → Devices / Audio & Video
      • Check:
        • Camera preview shows your face clearly
          • Microphone input bar moves when you speak
            • Speakers/headphones play test audio

    You can also:

    • Use the built-in “Test Call” feature in Teams or Zoom
    • Open the Windows Camera app to confirm the webcam works
    • Verify no other app is currently using the camera

    If the camera is blank:

    • Check Windows Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
    • Make sure camera access is enabled for desktop apps

It’s also a good idea to test:

    • lighting,
    • internet connection,
    • and background noise

a day before the interview so there are no surprises.

    Hi @Lisa Gemma,

I’m happy to help you prepare for your upcoming interviews. Below are a few simple checks you can complete to make sure your camera and video are working properly. If you prefer, you can also involve your IT or helpdesk team to walk through these steps with you.

1/ Run the built‑in Teams test call:

If you’re using the Teams desktop app, Microsoft Teams offers a Make a test call feature that allows you to quickly confirm your microphone, speaker, and camera are working correctly. At the end of the call, you’ll also receive a short summary.

To do this, open Teams and go to Settings and more (… ) > Settings > Devices. Under Audio settings, select Make a test call and follow the prompts from the Test Call Bot.

Please note that this feature is currently available only in English and is not supported in Teams on the web. You can review Microsoft’s guidance here: Make a test call.

2/ Complete a quick “video readiness” checklist:

In addition to the test call, it may help to review the following items:

    A. Make sure the camera isn’t in use by another app

First, close any applications that might be using your camera, such as other meeting tools or browser tabs. After that, restart Teams if needed. If you’re using an external camera, unplugging and reconnecting it, or restarting your device, can also help.

    B. Check for updates

Next, ensure both your operating system and the Teams app are fully up to date.

    C. Verify camera permissions (Windows)

If you’re on Windows, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and confirm that camera access is enabled, including for desktop apps like Microsoft Teams.

    D. If you’re using Teams on the web

In this case, you may need to allow camera and microphone access in your browser’s site permissions. Please note that some of these settings may be controlled by your organization’s IT administrator.

3/ Optional) Use Microsoft’s device test page:

If you’d like an additional check, Microsoft provides a device test page where you can quickly confirm that your browser can detect your camera, microphone, and speakers. You can allow access temporarily for testing purposes here: Device test.

4/ Contact an online support agent or your IT team:

If this is a work or school Teams account, the quickest option is usually your company’s IT or helpdesk team. They can review your device settings, permissions, and policies, and even run a test meeting with you if needed.

If you don’t have access to an IT team, or if this is a personal setup, you can also contact Microsoft Support through the Teams troubleshooting and “Contact Microsoft support” options.

I hope these steps help you feel confident and ready for your interviews. Please give them a try and let me know how it goes. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reply. I’ll be happy to continue supporting you.

Use this checklist to make sure video is working before the interviews.

    1. Verify the camera in Windows
    • Open Device Manager (press the Windows key, type Device Manager, select it).
    • Expand Imaging devices (or Cameras).
    • Confirm the camera is listed.
    • If it shows Integrated Camera (or similar), right-click it:
      • If Enable is available, select it to turn the camera on.
      • If Disable is shown, the camera is already enabled.
    1. Check for basic camera issues
    • If there is a physical privacy shutter on the laptop camera, slide it open.
    • If using an external USB camera, plug it directly into the PC (avoid USB hubs) and try another USB port if needed.
    • If the camera is not listed in Device Manager or shows a warning icon, reinstall the camera using the latest drivers from the manufacturer.
    1. Test the camera in a Microsoft app (Lync/Skype guidance applies similarly to Teams)
    • Open the client (for example, Skype for Business or Lync-style settings in Teams).
    • Go to Tools > Video Device Settings (or Options > Video Device in Lync-style UI).
    • Confirm that:
      • The correct camera appears in the drop-down list.
      • The preview window shows live video.
    • If more than one camera appears, switch between them to pick the best one.
    • If the camera does not appear in the list:
      • Make sure it is plugged in and turned on (for external cameras).
      • Confirm again in Device Manager that it is listed and enabled.
    1. Make sure no other app is blocking the camera
    • Close any apps that might be using the webcam (browser tabs with video calls, other meeting apps, video editors, virtual camera tools).
    • If the webcam has an indicator light and it is on when no call is active, another app is using it—close that app and re-open Teams.
    1. Run a test meeting before the interview
    • Schedule a short test meeting in Teams.
    • Join the meeting and turn on the camera.
    • Confirm that:
      • The self-view shows correctly.
      • Other participants (or a test account) can see the video.

If any step fails (no preview, camera missing, or black image), focus on:

    • Enabling the camera in Device Manager.
    • Closing other apps that might be using the camera.
    • Reinstalling or updating the camera driver.
