Hi everyone,

My Microsoft 365 desktop apps on Mac suddenly stopped allowing me to edit documents today, even though everything was working perfectly this morning.

Now every Office app shows this message:

“Your account allows viewing documents, but it doesn't allow editing on a Mac.”

Has anyone experienced this before or found a fix?
Im literally crashing out rn

    Hi Marian Roja

Based on my research, the message you’re seeing usually indicates a change in licensing or in how your account is recognized by the Office apps.

Even if it was working earlier today, education tenants can apply updates or license changes that take effect immediately.

First, please check with your school or IT administrator to confirm your current license. You’ll want to verify whether your account still has a license that includes desktop Office apps (such as Microsoft 365 A3 or A5). If your account has been switched to an A1 (web-only) license, desktop editing on Mac is not supported and the apps will show view-only mode.

To try refreshing your Office activation:

    • Open Word (or any Office app) > Go to Word > Settings > Account
    • Sign out of your account > Close all Office applications completely
    • Reopen Word and sign back in

If that doesn’t resolve it, you can clear cached credentials:

    • Open Keychain Access on your Mac (Click the Finder icon > click Applications >Scroll down to find the Utilities folder > Keychain access) Search for entries related to: Microsoft Office, ADAL, AzureAD,...
    • Delete those entries
    • Restart your Mac and sign back into Office

You can also verify your current activation status in Word under “About Word” or the Account section to ensure it shows a valid licensed product rather than view-only.

If the issue appeared suddenly without any changes on your side, it is very likely due to a backend license or policy update by your school. In that case, your IT administrator will need to either reassign a license that includes desktop apps or confirm whether desktop editing is still supported for your account.

As a temporary workaround, you can continue editing documents using Office on the web through your browser.

    I hope this information helps.

The message means the account is not currently licensed for editing in the Mac desktop apps, so Office has dropped into a view‑only state.

To fix it, follow these steps in order:

    1. Verify that a license with desktop apps is assigned
      • A Microsoft 365 admin must:
        1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center → UsersActive users.
        2. Select the affected user.
        3. In the right pane, select Licenses and Apps.
        4. Under Licenses, make sure a plan that includes the desktop Office apps for Mac is checked.
        5. If it is already checked, uncheck it, select Save changes, then check it again and Save changes once more to refresh the assignment.
      • If the user only has a plan such as Microsoft 365 Business Basic (web and mobile only), the desktop Mac apps will remain view‑only. In that case, upgrade/assign a plan that includes desktop apps.
    2. Sign out of Office on the Mac and sign back in
      1. Open any Office app (for example, Word).
      2. Select the name/profile icon at the top.
      3. Choose Sign out and close all Office apps.
      4. Reopen Word, choose Sign in, and use the work or school account that has the proper license (not a personal Microsoft account).
      5. Confirm activation completes and editing is enabled.
    3. Remove old Mac license files if the problem persists
      • Run the Mac license removal steps from How to remove Office license files on a Mac. This clears corrupted or stale license data.
      • After removal, reopen an Office app and sign in again with the correctly licensed account.
    4. If activation still fails, reinstall Office for Mac
      1. Uninstall Office for Mac using the steps in Uninstall Office for Mac.
      2. Reinstall from the account portal using Download and install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2021 on a PC or Mac.
      3. Open an app, sign in with the licensed work/school account, and complete activation.

If the device cannot contact the Office Licensing Service for an extended period (for example, more than 30 days), Office also goes into reduced functionality mode (view‑only). Ensuring the Mac is online and successfully signing in with a properly licensed account restores full editing.
