Starting around three weeks ago suddenly all of our employees in our dept stopped receiving notifications for all of our channels via mobile devices. We have all notifications turned on and it’s across the board. Individual chats are the only thing we received notifications on. This is on both iOS and Android platforms. Any help?? Our IT dept has not been able to help us. We are a large healthcare organization and it appears to only be our surgical dept. thanks.

    Hi @Karner, Jessica

Based on what you described, this issue is impacting multiple users, across both iOS and Android devices, and has persisted for around three weeks. You also mentioned that your IT department has already looked into this but has not been able to resolve it. With this level of scope and duration, the issue is unlikely to be caused by individual settings or devices and will require further investigation at the service or tenant level. At this point, I suggest raising a support ticket with Microsoft so they can investigate this from the backend.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

Here’s what your Microsoft 365 Global Admin (IT Admin) should do next:

    • Submit a Service Request: The Global Admin should create a service request with Microsoft support to get advanced technical assistance and diagnostics. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.
    • Find Your Microsoft 365 Admin: If you’re unsure who the Global Admin is within your organization, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.
    • If your subscription is managed through a Microsoft partner or reseller, they can also assist with opening a support request and liaising with Microsoft on your behalf.

Note: If you’re an end-user, please coordinate with your Office 365 Global Administrator to handle these steps.

I apologize for redirecting you the related team support, as the moderators in this community don’t have access to the detailed system needed to troubleshoot this effectively due to privacy and security constraints. But Microsoft’s support team has elevated permissions and access to backend systems that we, as community moderators, do not. This ensures your issue is handled with the right tools and expertise and helps you get a faster resolution.

Hopefully they will be able to help with your issue and if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Channel notifications for Teams mobile are controlled both per-user and per-channel, and can easily end up muted even when chat notifications still work. Because this is affecting only channel activity, across both iOS and Android, and only for one department, the most likely causes are:

    • Channel or team-level notification settings changed (e.g., switched from “All activity” to “Mentions only”).
    • Per-user mobile notification settings customized so channel activity is suppressed.
    • Device-level notification permissions for Teams disabled or restricted on mobile devices.

Use the following checks and fixes on a few affected users first, then roll out to the rest of the department.

    1. Verify Teams mobile notification mode On each user’s phone:
      1. Open the Teams mobile app.
      2. Tap the profile picture at the top left.
      3. Tap Notifications.
      4. Ensure Show notifications is turned On.
      5. Under overall notification style, select All activity so that notifications are sent for chats, calls, @mentions, channels, meetings, and more.
If this was set to something more restrictive (for example, only mentions), channel posts without @mentions will not notify on mobile.
    2. Confirm channel notifications are not customized off For key channels where notifications are missing, have a user:
      1. Open the channel in Teams mobile.
      2. Check the channel’s notification settings (for example, ensure it is not muted or set to “Off” for new posts and replies).
Even if global notifications are on, a muted channel or restrictive channel-level setting will block notifications for that channel.
    3. Check device-level notification permissions (iOS and Android) Teams can be fully enabled in-app but blocked at the OS level. On several affected devices:
      • From within Teams mobile:
        1. Tap the profile picture > Notifications.
        2. If a banner appears saying notifications are off, tap Open settings.
      • In the device’s Settings app (triggered by the step above):
        1. Go to Notifications > Teams.
        2. Turn on Allow notifications.
        3. Ensure banners/alerts and sounds are enabled as desired.
If Teams is missing from iOS Settings, uninstall and reinstall Teams on that device to restore notification registration.
    4. Check Android-specific issues (for Android users) On Android devices, battery optimization or permissions can silently block notifications:
      • Ensure Teams has required permissions:
        1. Open Settings.
        2. Tap Apps.
        3. Select Teams.
        4. Tap Permissions and enable required permissions.
      • Disable battery optimization for Teams (Android 6.0.1 and later):
        1. Open Settings.
        2. Tap Battery.
        3. Tap More options > Battery Optimization.
        4. Choose All apps.
        5. Select Teams and choose Don’t optimize.
      • For Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi, and other OEMs, ensure Teams is allowed to auto-start, is protected from aggressive battery management, and is prioritized for notifications as described in the device-specific steps in the reference.
    5. Test with a controlled channel post After applying the above on a few devices:
      1. Post a new message in a shared channel that everyone follows.
      2. Have users confirm whether they receive a mobile notification.
      3. Optionally @mention the team or channel to verify that mention notifications are working as expected.
    6. If the issue persists only for this department Because this affects only one department in a large organization, if all the above user/device settings are correct, the next step is for IT to:
      • Compare Teams policies (messaging/notification policies) applied to this department’s users vs. other departments that are not affected.
      • Confirm there is no conditional access, MDM, or mobile app management policy that recently changed and might be suppressing or altering mobile notifications for these users.
If IT confirms policies are identical and the problem continues, capture logs and details (tenant, affected users, sample channels, timestamps) and open a support case with Microsoft, referencing that chat notifications still work but channel notifications do not on mobile.
