Microsoft email regarding Complete Purchase to keep account active for Entra ID tenant?

Received email that appears to be from Microsoft telling me that I have to complete a purchase by May 6 to keep my account active. "You are receiving this email because your associated Microsoft Entra ID tenant (tenant ID xxxxxxxxxxxx) has been inactive for more than 200 days. Required action: To continue using your tenant, make a purchase before May 6, 2025. If you don’t make a purchase before this date, your next purchase with Microsoft will require a new Microsoft Entra ID tenant to continue using Microsoft services."

I have no idea what they are talking about. I have a Microsoft 365 Family subscription but renew it using a purchased subscription every year (Military license) and my 365 subscription currently is valid for two more years. I haven't purchased anything else directly from Microsoft that I can remember for years. I also don't intend to purchase my subscription renewal through Microsoft unless they discontinue offering the Military licenses through AAFES.

Can I ignore this? I just don't want anything to happen to my 365 subscription because my family relies on it for OneDrive (and Office).

The email you received from Microsoft indicates that your Microsoft Entra ID tenant has been inactive for over 200 days. This is a reminder to take action regarding your tenant's inactivity.

To avoid any service disruptions, it's recommended that you make a purchase or renew your existing subscriptions before the deadline of May 6, 2025. This will ensure that your tenant remains active.

For clarification regarding the Entra ID tenant, a Microsoft Entra tenant provides identity and access management (IAM) capabilities for the applications and resources used by your organization. An identity represents a directory object that can be authenticated and authorized to access resources. These identity objects include human identities (such as students and teachers) as well as non-human identities like classroom and student devices, applications, and service principals.

The Microsoft Entra tenant serves as an identity security boundary under the control of your organization’s IT department. Within this boundary, the administration of objects (such as user objects) and the configuration of tenant-wide settings are managed by your IT administrators.

If you're already using services like Microsoft 365, Office 365, Azure, or Dynamics CRM Online, your tenant is automatically a Microsoft Entra tenant. You can start managing access to your integrated cloud apps right away. For additional information refer these documents: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/fundamentals/whatis

Microsoft typically sends emails regarding changes to accounts or services, but the message you received seems to be more related to a Microsoft Entra ID tenant, which is a different kind of account setup used by organizations rather than individual users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

If you are unfamiliar with "Microsoft Entra ID," it is likely a service meant for business or organizational users, not individual consumer accounts like Microsoft 365 Family. If you don’t manage any organizational accounts, you can probably ignore this.

    I hope this clarifies things.

I've documented and analyzed such an e-mail (I received by chance a couple of days before) within my blog post:

<External link has been removed by mod>

If that is a legit e-mail from Microsoft, it's insane and a no go.

If it's phishing,, Microsoft shall pronto explain, how to find out, it's phishing - and should publish a warning.

I've searched the internet and found many similar discussion - also my German blog post received many comments. For me, the MS eco system is broken in this case!

I don't have moderator rights here in this forum - so I can't escalate this thread to Microsoft moderators - but I recommend to forward this thread to a Microsoft official to get a statement, what's the matter. My blog post contains the e-mail header and more details - and I'm able to forward the mail, if I receive an e-mail address from Microsoft.

I received this email on June 2 2025: Action required: Make a purchase by July 3, 2025 to continue using your tenant

you are receiving this email because your associated Microsoft Entra ID tenant (tenant ID: xxxxxxxx) has been inactive for more than 200 days.

    ....

So after trying to make a purchase on with the address where I got the email (tried to do it with free items in the app store) I thought why is would I need to use actually money to keep an free email account i've had for years? and another thought came to mind I'm actively using this account all the time how is it inactive? searching through all my old email I thought how can I narrow this search down? use the phrase tenant id and one other email came up with the more information.

It's likely for my old work email account for a job I worked at back 5 years ago, the tenant ID is an exact match. July 3 2020 was my official last day.

I have an old email with:

Tenant name: company I worked for

tenant ID: xxxxxx-xxx-xxx-xxxx (same number in the recent email)

The email addresses on both are the same, so it seems to be a legit email from Microsoft however, I can't verify this by logging in to this old work email as I don't remember the address much less the password for said email.

I hope this helps someone out.

    IN SHORT

It is from Microsoft, It's for an old work email address, and last day was 5 years ago to the date.

I have the same issue. Just got an email today. I've never had a work email from Microsoft. I don't know what Entra ID is. I've never heard of Azure. The only thing I purchase from Microsoft is 365. So I guess I will just ignore the email. Doing an email search for "tenant ID" comes up empty. I am an individual not a business and I'm retired.

So I guess based on what I'm reading here, I'll just ignore this.

I have the same issue. I find it rather annoying that MS does not add more information in their mail. Because now I don’t know where it is about.

So I choose tot ignore this stupid mail from MS
