Clarification on Microsoft Entra ID Tenant Email and Purchase Requirement

Received an email from Microsoft about inactivity in the associated Microsoft Entra ID tenant for over 200 days, stating that a purchase is needed to continue using the tenant before June 15, 2025.

The concern arises because a personal Office 365 license was purchased, which expires in March 2026. Why is an additional purchase necessary? Additionally, will this requirement affect the personal email account ******@hotmail.com? If it doesn't impact the email account, such as losing personal emails and folders in ******@hotmail.com, can the email be ignored? Also, there is a lack of understanding regarding what Microsoft Entra ID is and why this email was received.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Since I no longer work in an organization or company, can I assume I don't need to purchase anything to continue tenant ID? My only concern is now I am a standalone user of Office 365 for Home, whose license will expire in March 2026; there should be no interruption of use with the tenant ID expired? More importantly, I have used my personal ******@hotmail.com email account for 40 years. I mustn't lose any emails and access to this personal email account in the future, even if the tenant ID expires. Your second last comment seems to address my concerns.

I like to thank sincerely S.P. Kotte's detailed answer and the additional comment. They are very assuring that my personal Microsoft account and services won't be impacted. It a 5-star experience. Though Microsoft team should not send out this kind of email to individual who likely has no idea what's going on. I spent hours to research the topic and as everyone knows it's almost impossible to get support agent to talk alive which panic many users and customers. Again thank you S.P. Kotte!

I agree completely with the comment that these emails should not be sent out in their current form to individuals. There is almost no information useful in the email to take action other than to purchase something!!

Hi Possibly the answer from Surya Prakash Kotte of 16 May 2025 (above) will also answer my query. I have similar circumstances to Sai-Kei Ng and had a request from Microsoft today to make a new purchase before Aug3 to keep my account active.

But I do not know why I have 'an associated Microsoft Entra ID tenant' nor can I identify to what the ID is linked.

If it is an organisational issue, why did I get a direct request to purchase?

Will you please confirm that ignoring this request to purchase will not impact any of my personal dealings such as through Msoft 365?

You are receiving this email because your associated Microsoft Entra ID tenant (tenant ID ###) has been inactive for more than 200 days.

Required action: To continue using your tenant, make a purchase before August 28, 2025. If you don’t make a purchase before this date, your next purchase with Microsoft will require a new Microsoft Entra ID tenant to continue using Microsoft services.
