Error Code: 0x80240004

Hi,

I keep getting "Error Code: 0x80240004" when I try to download an App from the Windows Store (I'm using Windows 8), this applies to all apps.

I have tried using a new account, but that hasn't solved it, and neither has doing a clean reboot. I've also disabled my firewalls and internet security but that needn't solve the problem either.

For a short while, I was unable to open any of my existing apps, leading me to naively think that if I un-installed them, I could reinstall them straight away. I tested this with 2 (conveniently the ones I'm now needing) but now they won't reinstall. After I did a Windows Update, the problem with the existing apps seemed to end.

I have no idea what this problem is but I'm feeling it has something to do with the app store itself.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have a similar problem with that error code.

I ran the MS Fixit troubleshooter for windows store/windows update.

It did several fixes but reported that the results of the SFC scan could not be completed - a corrupt dll could not be replaced.

It didn't say directly which dll was affected; it said that information was in the CBS.log.

(to be able to read the CBS.log, the simplest approach is to copy it from %windir%/logs/cbs/cbs.log to some other folder e.g. desktop and then it will open in notepad)

The problematic file is qmgr.dll, part of the BITS download service.

This makes sense; with the BITS download broken, there is no way the store can download the app, let alone install it. However I can install normal windows 8 updates from control panel windows update

So the issue seems to do with that file, perhaps replacing that (possibly) damaged file - what's the method for that under Windows 8?

( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 gives the method for Windows 7)

Anyone know the method for replacing a dll?

---update---

After an alternate account was created on the computer, that account showed lots of update in the store. These downloaded and installed OK, but any attempts  to download and install new apps from the store resulted in a "this....is not available error".

The following morning, that issue has disappeared too.

Perhaps a reboot was needed to clear some residual error or complete some element of the troubleshooter that had lingered despite other reboots, perhaps there was an intermittent problem with connecting to the store. The mystery continues but the problem has passed.

    Hi

The following option you can try when Windows Update fails with a mysterious error such as 0x80240004

I have been facing the same problem and fixed that by trying the first option, hope it would help you out. It will also fix the store download app error

    1.     Click search icon and type cmd -> right click on cmd -> Run as administrator and run the following command:

    net stop wuauserv

(it will stop the windows updates server)

    Leave the CMD window open

    2.     Click the search icon again and type: %windir% and press Enter.

In the opened window, search and rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistributionold.123

    Close the window.

    3.     Go back to the cmd window and run the following command:

    net start wuauserv

(it will restart the windows updates server)

Now perform the windows update by clicking search icon, type windows update and press enter. Check the issue, hope it is gone now.

Try to download the apps from app store

Do not forget to mention if this became helpful to you or not.

    Enjoy

    Hi Liam,

    • Do you use proxy server  to connect to Internet? If yes, then please remove the proxy settings from Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings.

Here are a few things you may try.

    1. If you have any pending Windows Updates, then please install them and then try to download apps from the Windows Store.
    2. If the issue persists, then run the Apps Troubleshooter from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=268423

Once done, check if the issue persists. Also go through the steps mentioned in http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/what-troubleshoot-problems-app

    1. You may also consider resetting the Windows Store and check.
    •  Press the “Windows Logo” + “R”

    -  Type: WSReset.exe and press “Enter”.

Now try downloading the App from the Store and check.

Let us know the results after trying these steps.

    Hi,

It may be that a specific folder was missing (C:\Windows\AUInstallAgent).

If this issue occurs again (which is doubtful) try to create 'AUInstallAgent' manually.

    best regards

    Hi Kevin,

    Thank you for the advice.

Unfortunately, none of that has managed to solve it, so I'm a little stuck as to what to do. Is it possible to download apps off an internet browser as opposed to the app store?

    Thanks again
