Error Code: 0x80240004

Hi,

I keep getting "Error Code: 0x80240004" when I try to download an App from the Windows Store (I'm using Windows 8), this applies to all apps.

I have tried using a new account, but that hasn't solved it, and neither has doing a clean reboot. I've also disabled my firewalls and internet security but that needn't solve the problem either.

For a short while, I was unable to open any of my existing apps, leading me to naively think that if I un-installed them, I could reinstall them straight away. I tested this with 2 (conveniently the ones I'm now needing) but now they won't reinstall. After I did a Windows Update, the problem with the existing apps seemed to end.

I have no idea what this problem is but I'm feeling it has something to do with the app store itself.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have a similar problem with that error code.

I ran the MS Fixit troubleshooter for windows store/windows update.

It did several fixes but reported that the results of the SFC scan could not be completed - a corrupt dll could not be replaced.

It didn't say directly which dll was affected; it said that information was in the CBS.log.

(to be able to read the CBS.log, the simplest approach is to copy it from %windir%/logs/cbs/cbs.log to some other folder e.g. desktop and then it will open in notepad)

The problematic file is qmgr.dll, part of the BITS download service.

This makes sense; with the BITS download broken, there is no way the store can download the app, let alone install it. However I can install normal windows 8 updates from control panel windows update

So the issue seems to do with that file, perhaps replacing that (possibly) damaged file - what's the method for that under Windows 8?

( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 gives the method for Windows 7)

Anyone know the method for replacing a dll?

---update---

After an alternate account was created on the computer, that account showed lots of update in the store. These downloaded and installed OK, but any attempts  to download and install new apps from the store resulted in a "this....is not available error".

The following morning, that issue has disappeared too.

Perhaps a reboot was needed to clear some residual error or complete some element of the troubleshooter that had lingered despite other reboots, perhaps there was an intermittent problem with connecting to the store. The mystery continues but the problem has passed.

My only advice is don't use the 1800-MICROSOFT number. I got patched through to a Technician, who seemed very helpful at first and tried a lot of different methods (through using the remote access) as he was confused about the whole thing too.

He eventually ran a scan, which took so long that we ended up disconnected on the phone call, so we communicated through the remote access. I must have left the computer 10 minutes to get something to eat, and when I came back the computer was "configuring". Later on, it became apparent he'd set it to restore/reset/something along those lines that was almost like resetting it to factory settings, only my existing apps were there and all my files were still in order.

HOWEVER, I did lose 2 programs that I didn't have the Product Code to (as the IT guys at the school I work at put the products on). When I tried to call Microsoft through the Instant Messaging service, neither was able to have the answer and just passed the buck to someone else.

I know it's not there fault, but when I'm asking "How are you going to solve the fact you've removed the 2 programs (Office & CorelDraw, if your wondering), I need the most this weekend?" at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening and the answer is "call the support line open 9am-6pm monday to fridays", it does make you wonder.

I expected a lot more as I've usually found Microsoft to be very helpful.

Thanks for sharing that answer and its failure to resolve this issue.  I would assume a Full Restore would solve it, but await your trying it to see if it does.  In the meanwhile, I can offer a few other related experiences.

First, in searching elsewhere for a solution, I came across a very friendly and professional sounding "PC Tech" web page that suggested steps to definitly resolve that error code.  It gave a link and good recommendation to a scan application called "SpeedyPC PRO" as step one in fixing it.  DO NOT fall for this one - its a scam!  I downloaded and ran the scanner which (of course "founnd 987 errors" which you had to register the "free" product to allow it to "fix" those issues.  Lucky for me the register link didn't work and I later researched and found that its all bogus - just a way to get $40 from its victims.

Second,  following  a suggested appoach of setting up a new user account on my PC, I see my account was a "local account" and taht I needed to change that to a "Microsoft account" in order to get applications from the STORE.  Ah, I thought that made good sense, so went through the effort of establishing an account with Microsoft and changing my local PC user account from "local" to a "Microsoft" account.  That's didn't make any difference either.

Third, I used the web site reference on that STORE applicaton info page or the application name I was trying to install from the STORE to search the web for that product.  Then I used the download link from that product's web site and had my application installed I guess you would say "manually" - disappointed I wasn't able to solve the STORE problem (still getting that error code when I try) but not going to waste any further time on it unless someone REPLIES here with a true solution.  I've got my application working, and that's what I really needed for now.
