I can't get my printer to change from being "offline" to online & working

I have had an HP Envy 6400 Series (specifically a 6452e) printer since Oct 2024 and have had MANY problems with it. It frequently will not print - sometimes get an "offline" message. It does not have any "display" with words - only a few annoying few buttons that change colors & flash to mean different things and then the front "edge" of where the paper *should* come out, after printing, also changes colors & flashes "in code." There is no place to plug in a cord to connect it directly to the laptop either. We moved the printer much closer to my laptop & router area but still have problems. It has now been "offline" for 7-10 days & I can't get it to work from my laptop. I have to use this HP Smart app now (which I HATE) & I did manage to print 1 document from my phone but can't print from my laptop. This problem started after we lost power from a storm. I think that the printer might be connected to one "version" of my Spectrum wifi & that the laptop is connected to a different version because I can see several versions of wifi on my laptop when I check the settings but I have no way to see which version is being used by the printer. BTW, I am not very tech savvy, in case you can't tell

    Hello TerrapinTwins

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A.Thank you for sharing.

    1.  Check Printer’s Wi-Fi Connection

Since the printer has no screen, you’ll need to rely on the lights:

    • Solid blue light on the wireless button = connected to Wi-Fi
    • Blinking blue light = trying to connect
    • No light or amber flashing = not connected

    If it’s not solid blue:

    • Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel button together for 5 seconds to reset the network settings.
    • Then use the HP Smart app to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi.

Make sure your laptop and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network — not a guest or 5GHz-only network.

    2.  Use HP Smart App to Reconnect

Even if you dislike the app (understandably!), it’s the easiest way to reconnect:

a.Open HP Smart on your laptop

    b.Click “+” to add a printer

c.Follow the steps to reconnect to Wi-Fi

    • You may need to temporarily connect your laptop to the printer’s DIRECT-xx-HP network to configure it

    3.  Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only)

This free tool from HP can fix most offline issues:

    4.  Assign a Static IP Address (Advanced but helpful)

Sometimes the printer gets confused when your router changes its IP address.  You can:

    • Print a network configuration page (press Wireless + Info buttons together)
    • Find the IP address
    • Type it into your browser to open the printer’s settings
    • Set a manual IP address so it doesn’t change again

    5.  Avoid Guest or Public Networks

Make sure your printer is not connected to:

    • A guest network
    • A 5GHz-only network (some printers prefer 2.4GHz)
    • A network with login portals (like in hotels or schools)

Hope the above information is helpful to you!
