Desktop option not available under "File open preference" for default option to open a file in Teams?

Most people on my team--me included--can choose between Teams, Desktop, and Browser under "File open preference" in Teams. We like to set this to "Desktop" so that everyone edits in the Desktop app which seems to be more stable for formatting.

One of our teammates can only see Teams and Browser as an option. Below is what she sees:

I've confirmed she is in the Desktop App version of Teams and she does have a desktop app version of all Microsoft apps. If she goes to a file, she can choose to open it in the Desktop App over the other choices. However, she cannot set that as a default. We use Microsoft 365 and always have the latest versions on Dell computers. I did ask her to do a full sign out of Teams one afternoon and re-sign back in the next morning to push any Teams updates.

Please let me know if you have any solutions so she can set this default option. Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

We would like to report that we have the same issue in one of our environments and are also investigating this on our end.
From our end we are checking if the requirements of this learn document are met
Desktop app option is missing when editing Office files in Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

On our side we can at least confirm the following:

    • Latest version of Teams has been installed
    • Latest version of Office has been installed
    • Licenses have been correctly assigned to the users

The last step asks you to check if "O365ProPlusRetail" Product ID is present by running a powershell command. If this is not the case, a full removal of all Office applications from the computer and a reinstall from the microsoft portal may be the way forward.

after some checking we also found the following topic: Microsoft Teams - "Open with the desktop app" default setting has - Microsoft Community
they asked to check the following registry key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration and Look on the right for "ProductReleaseIds"

Older installed or prepackaged installs could have an unsupported ReleaseID and should be changed to "O365ProPlusRetail" for this option to work.

We will be checking this on our end and providing feedback.

    Thank you, Bertrand.

I was able to confirm that my teammate's Office version was consistent with mine and others on our team.

However, she was not willing to clear her cache, as she did not want to lose her customizations. She said it was not worth the effort for this feature. So I guess that stops my inquiry. Thank you for your time and insight.

Hello Graeme Tucker (SHIPLEY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT)

Good day and thanks for posting in Microsoft community.

The inability to select the Desktop option as a default for opening files in Microsoft Teams can be attributed to a few potential issues within the Teams settings or configuration. One potential reason could be your teammate may not have the necessary permissions or account settings to set the Desktop app as the default option. This could arise from specific account restrictions based on organizational policies or configurations in Microsoft 365.

Even though you confirmed that she has the latest version, it is worth checking if the Microsoft Teams desktop app is compatible with the installed versions of other Office applications. However, given the current situation, we need more information to narrow down the issue and better assist you.

    1. What office version is Teammate using? About Office: What version of Office am I using?
    2. Can you verify if her version of Teams is the same as those of her teammates?
    3. Has she tried clearing the Teams cache? Sometimes cache issues can affect functionality. Clear Teams cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn
    4. Have you tried logging in her account on your account to see if the issue persists? This could help determine if it’s account-specific?

Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

    Awaiting your valuable response.

    Sincerely,

    Bertrand
