I believe that message indicates that the email address you're trying to invite belongs to a group object rather than a user object.

2022-09-08T17:00:45.817+00:00 Hello @Marc Livingstone ,
Welcome to the MS Q&A forum.
When you attempt to perform an invitation, on the backend Azure has a process that performs a lookup for the email address, which is a unique value on a directory. In this specific case, since it returns the 'Group', respond provides the error message that you retrieved, as it is not possible to invite this type of objects.
In addition, please make sure what account exists (already created) in the host directory.
Hope above answers your question and concern. Let me know if you need additional assistance. If the answer was helpful, please accept it and complete the quality survey so that others can find a solution.
Sincerely,
Olga
