Dear Support,

I am trying to upgrade Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2022 and wish to keep files, settings and apps.

This option is 'greyed out', leaving only 'Nothing' as the available option.

Please can you advise on how to overcome this problem?

Thank you,

Allen

    Hi DSPatrick,

Thanks for the help - I am running the DVD, and using the 'setup.exe' as the starting program, launching it from the existing Server 2016 operating system. It runs through all the initial set-up procedures - entering the license key etc., but just will not give the option to 'Keep files, settings and apps'.

I'll have a look at the log files and see if I can decipher anything that may help.

    I appreciate you help,

    Allen

    Hi DSPatrick,

I checked the log files in the 'Panther' folder, and found several errors (0xC1800104 and others).

    Ran the following commands:
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

And the installation is now progressing!

    Many thanks for your help,

    ALlen

    Hi DSPAtrick,

    Sorry - spoke too soon!!

    Now have the error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during the BOOT operation.

I see on other posts you have helped others with this problem - I'll try working through those!

    Best wishes,

    Allen

Sounds like some hardware errors. I'd confirm here and with server manufacturer about support for Server 2022

    Hi DSPatrick,

I went through the installation process again, but did not allow any checking for installation updates, and it all installed without any further problems. Carried out the necessary operating system upgrades, and all appears to be functioning correctly.

    Many thanks for you help!

Just one further question - the original Server 2016 had the facility to e-mail a 'Health Check' - has that been removed from Server 2022? I haven't been able to find it in my brief examination of the options.

    I really appreciate your help,

    Best wishes,

    Allen
