Forecast Factor Calculation

In our organization's Microsoft Dynamics environment, there is a setting within each opportunity labeled "Lifecycle/Ramp Years". For example, an opportunity might have a setting such as "8/1.5". This signifies that an opportunity is expected to have a life cycle of 8 years and take 1.5 years to reach peak value. 8 years of a life cycle would have 32 quarters (8*4). The "Lifecycle/Ramp Years" setting is a hyperlink that brings the user to a "Forecast Logic" page. On this page, there is a setting listed as "Forecast Factor" and then there is a break down of the percentage volume expected to be captured in each quarter. It appears that each Lifecycle & Ramp Year combination has a unique "Forecast Factor". The percentage volume of a given quarter can be determined by multiplying the ratio of "quarter setting / Forecast Factor" by the lifetime volume. My questions are as follows:

  • How is forecast factor calculated and how does it relate to the "Lifecycle/Ramp Years" setting?
  • What is the shape of the lifetime volume profile? It appears to be some form of an S-curve, maybe based upon a hyperbolic cosine? Thanks in advance!!
