Windows Update Not Installing After Restart

Hi all,

I have been trying to install the Windows configuration update (KB5030509) but the Windows update is not installing even after restarting the device. I have renamed the software distribution folder and restarted the following service, but I had no luck. I also ran sfc and DISM scans. I have the following commands

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

I'm facing the exact same problem. This update doesn't apply after restarting, and renaming stuff or deleting them doesn't make the windows update prompt go away.

Someone mentioned on Reddit to do a system restore to go on the previous update, I did that and my device started throwing random errors at me while using it, Now I am downloading the ISO from creation tool so that I can install the fresh windows and disable the updates except the security ones.

I installed windows 11 from the media creation tool, I checked for the update to install the driver and that update popped up, I was afraid that it would break the PC again. But it installed fine and had so issue what so ever

I have seen that other users whom are using AMD hardware are also having this issue. Correct me if I am wrong but if you use the media creation tool to create an update iso to upgrade your current windows it will only install Microsoft certified drivers. Microsoft certified drivers do not always support all functions and features of other hardware manufacturers. You may find some functions are disabled with Microsoft drivers. This may explain why the ISO upgrade may work. (You may also lose some functionality with Microsoft only drivers). Could the problem be that some of my latest manufacture drivers are incompatible with the KB5030510 update and that the KB5030509 update (that activates some of features in KB5030510) cannot use my up to date manufacturers drivers?

I am seeing more and more AMD hardware users are having this issue. Could it be that Microsoft is trying to take over functions that are controlled in bios by AMD? KB5030510 contains software to control RGB lighting that is controlled by Arora in bios. Fan expert is also loaded in bios. The AMD bios programs may not allow other programs to overwrite them to take over control of their functions. That would explain why the KB5030509 update cannot activate the functions that could not be overwritten and why the KB5030509 cannot finish being installed. Microsoft may have to write a newer version of KB5030510 and another version of KB5030509 to activate those functions on AMD hardware. WIntel strikes again!

I think I fixed the problem. I put a weak pause on updates. I then googled AMD chipset drivers. Easiest way to find them, put in the socket type. Mine is AM4 then the chipset, mine is still the old B350. I download them and did a restart, make sure you have the update set to pause for 1 week. Then restart, mine started and restarted again, but I could see clearly that it was installing the drives with a % like 35% percent installed. Once the machine was done, I went to the check for updates, and it worked when it rebooted and said everything is up-to-date!!

I may have found the solution. Go to Update History, scroll down to Uninstall Updates (down at the very bottom). Remove every entry there. Mine were mostly Microsoft Visual C++ patches. Not to worry, Windows will prompt you later to reinstall any necessary updates. Then reboot, let Windows Update run. Worked for me! I sincerely hope it works for you too!

Every time I try to update, it fails and I have to either wait until the computer removes them or reset it.

I've had the same issue for months. Intel processor and NVidia card. When I restart or reboot the update keeps telling me that it still needs to restart.

Having the same issue. I have had to restore my system to a date prior to the KB5030509 download to clear the windows update issue. Now I will have to do it again because my system downloaded the KB5030509 update again with the same results. This time I will have to suspend updates after restoring my system again.

Is this update compatible with AMD hardware?

My system is an ASUS ROG STRIX X570E Gaming motherboard with a Ryzen 9 3900x and an NVIDA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (FE). I have 32.0GB system ram and over 600GB free unused SSD space.

Is there a minimum system specification for this update? Note: I restore from an external backup using Aomei. I do not try to use a corrupted system to uncorrupt itself.

Solved: I used the windows media creation tool to install the latest version of windows (22H2 because 23H2 is not available yet). I installed it over my existing installation to keep all of my existing programs and data. It uninstalled some programs that ASUS uses to automatically update some AMD drivers and "temporarily disabled" some other AMD programs/drivers. Everything works under the newer version of windows. KB5030509 does not download because it is already included in the latest media creation tool version. I just wish that Microsoft would fix the slooooow response time that windows 11 has. It takes up to 20 seconds to start programs now and SSD drive speed is less than 1/2 of what it used to be before they changed the way that they handle the stack.

Just found out why copilot is not installing. I am running 3 monitors at 4k uhd resolution. Microsoft has a bug in copilot that effects multi-monitor configurations. All of the desktop icons jump between monitors when copilot starts. (I managed to get copilot to work for one day. The next day Microsoft uninstalled it with another update.) I saw the bug in action for the one day it was installed on my system.

Update April 16th 2024: KB5030509 was released by Microsoft early without being fully tested. Microsoft does this fairly often. They release an update and then when problems pop up they keep it quiet until they can come up with a new fix to take care of the issues that they should have addressed before they released the update that has problems. KB5030509 tried to install a bunch of updates that concerned Microsoft Co-pilot. It did not activate Co-pilot it was just supposed to get a system ready for Co-pilot to be implemented by a future update. Co-pilot was not ready for anyone that was using more than one monitor. Microsoft stopped trying to install that version of Co-pilot on any multi-monitor system. Now after six months of changes Co-pilot is finally working with AMD hardware on multi-monitor systems.

Same problem here. Other updates are blocked because this doesn't install. I restarted my machine serveral times, but it it's stuck right here. Strange there's no information about this item. Can you please help me?

But let me help you, I did some homework

The configuration file is pending, because the co-pilot function is not yet available in Europe.

Some people claim, its working via a cmd and script instruction to start Co-pilot.

I have tried this, just opens Edge in the default url.

About Co-pilot,

Due to the European restrictions about data, privacy, etc the Co-pilot is not activated for (some) Windows 11 machines that not set in the USA.

I had problems during the restart and shutdown of my device so I posted the exact same issue in r/windowshelp Reddit and someone mentioned using the restore point and going to the previous version. I did that and my device after completing of restore threw a bunch of errors so I have no choice but to install a fresh installation

I'm somewhat computer literate but changing the partition size is daunting for me. Installing critical updates should be no-brainers.
