My surface app is not displaying an option to enable or disable smart charging, as you can see on the attached image I can view smart charging instructions but there's no option to enable or disable it

    Hi Hussain_02,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

Smart charging is always active and turns on automatically when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures. Only some Surface devices can manually pause smart charging, which does not include Surface Laptop 4. To see compatible devices, go to Caring for your Surface battery and look for devices that don't have an asterisk (*).

For Surface Laptop 4 and the other Surface devices that support Battery Smart Charging but have an asterisk (*), a battery with a heart icon won’t appear. To fully charge your Surface, you'll need to follow the Battery Smart Charging steps above in Surface features to optimize your battery longevity.

If you would like to provide your feedback and suggestions on how to improve this feature, please click the Feedback button in the lower right corner of Surface app or visit Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support to use the Feedback Hub.

I wish you all the best and stay safe!

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

I am thoroughly disappointed in the lack of control over this feature. I feel my laptop battery is degrading and there is nothing I can do about it because I am not able to manually turn back on smart charging. I turned it off once and now I am doomed.

I agree with all the comments regarding the non-sensical, unnecessary automation of this feature by Microsoft.

This happened to me as well on my Surface Pro 9 i5. Ever since the first day I clicked on Smart Charging button on Surface App to temporarily disable it, it never became available again--even when I reset the machine twice!!

As a workaround, I did the following:

    1. Edit power plan > set critical battery level alert at 80%
    2. Edit power plan > set low battery level at 40%
    3. Set a timer on my phone for exactly 35 minutes
    4. When low battery alert activates > plug in charger and start the timer
    5. When critical battery alert and/or timer activates > unplug charger as it is now at 80%

The above has worked reliably and consistently ever since. It never takes longer to charge than 35 minutes from 40%.

Of course, this also means I have to be diligent about keeping up with this routine to protect the battery, which is Microsoft's fault. However, I hope they fix it by end of this year with a Windows Update.
