Disk Optimization IS NOT Running Automatically Properly

Eddie, recall my stressing the importance of showing last run date in thread for disk optimization. Not positive if this started with 19042.508 /546

First noticed this in my main system last week running 20H2 (non-insider). Disk Optimization is not running automatically, had about 13 days showing last run, settings are at default to run weekly. Did a manual run back last week.

This snapshot is from a virtual machine 20H2 that I test software on daily. Both devices are kept current with builds.

This snapshot is from my main system today. Have to give it couple more days to verify and will file a FBH report at that time and update this thread. Please advise if there is anything else I can add with FBH report.

Regards,

Reply to Eddies post on optimization

The frequency of this task just means it will perform those check at that frequency but the defrag service may choose to not run the optimization on a volume.

That's fine, but if it doesn't run the optimization because of the checks, then the Days since last optimization should be updated as if an optimization was run. That way, people won't be confused when you schedule it daily, but the days still say 0 since last optimization.

As I said, we need to investigate that.

Another day, no change with Disk Optimization:

    FBH link:  https://aka.ms/AA9zxhw

    Johnny,

On this feedback, both the event log and defrag status in the registry indicate the UI is displaying correctly.

    • Full defragmentation was run on Volumes D:, E:, F: and G: on 2020/10/11
    • Retrim was run on C: and 'System Reserved' volumes on 2020/10/06
    • Full defragmentation was run on C: and 'System Reserved' volumes on 2020/09/25

So while nothing is broken, I think I see your concern here. I can see the confusion between the what is happening and what the UI is displaying. Part of this is full understanding of the optimization process. I agree the UI could probably use some clarification. I've taken this back to the feature team for discussion. Please understand that this does not mean any changes will occur around this, and if they do, it will be some time.

    Hi Eddie,

Thanks again for the explanation regarding concern over SSD drives. I read the updated link you provided regarding disk defrag and that explains the concern regarding scheduling on SSD. Was aware of the HDD being defragged on schedule, the Trim that was run on 10/06 was done manually.

Normally never see this. Guess it's the old school in me, anytime I install any programs, update, etc., run Disk Cleanup and then Optimize (Trim) the C:drive. Hard to shake old habits from Dos days  :-)

If I understand this correctly, does Optimization only trim once per 30 days or is it actually going to do a defrag (continuous files). That part was really not clear:

    Defrag

    Regards,

Let me confirm with the Dev.

Also on the VM you shared a screenshot on in your OP, can you file the feedback from that device as well and include the Application event log (you may have to manually save and attach it.) We'd like to confirm what occurred on that device.

And one more thing can you enable Task Scheduler history on the VM?
