Quicken Program Won't Open

I have been a Quicken user for many years.  Two weeks ago, the Quicken 2007 program stopped opening and I got the error message "Quicken launcher has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  Yesterday, I updated to the Quicken 2009 program but still get the same error message.

I am able to open the Quicken 2009 program and data file as a different administrative user on the same computer, but I am the primary computer user and have administrative privileges.  It seems like there must be something wrong with my user profile or administrative privileges.

Please help!

    Hi Cindy-S,

Thank you for posting on the forums.

Sorry to hear about the problems that you’re running into. You might have some programs running in the background of Vista that’s conflicting with your Quicken. I’m going to provide with instructions on how to clean boot your machine first.  I’ll also provide you with a link on how to fix your profile.  You might also need to reinstall your Quicken 2009 so please have you’re media and product key to reinstall it.

Let's try clean booting the system to remove 3rd party software and see if that clears up the problem.

Follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”

    ·         Click the Start orb on your Desktop

    ·         Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    ·         On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    ·         Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box

    ·         Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All

    ·         Click OK

When you are prompted, click Restart

Now try your Quicken, are you still getting the same error? This will also be the best time to uninstall and reinstall Quicken if you’re still getting the error message.

Now if clean booting your machine did resolve the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue.

How to set your computer back, to boot normal:

    ·         Click the Start orb on your Desktop

    ·         In the Start Search box. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Click the General tab.

    ·         Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK

    ·         When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

If that doesn’t work , here’s a link on how to

    Fix a corrupted user profile

Hope that will do the trick for you. Please post back and let us know your results.

My Quicken program worked yesterday.  How come it doesn't work today??  I have not downloaded any programs that might interfere.  There are several folks having the same problem.  I am running updated Windows 10.  Please help.

Hi Terry,  I understand your frustration, and that of many others in the Community.  What I am going to write is somewhat anecdotal, but I think it is probably correct, or at least will be helpful.  As I have written in previous Community posts, my problem started similarly to yours, except that the first thing that would not run was Office 2013.  In fixing that, MS upgraded my system to a subscription of Office 365.  However after that was running, my Quicken Deluxe 2017 would not run.  Also about this time, I could not get my TurboTax 2016 to run.  At that point I was primarily concerned about Quicken, which I use a lot.  After many hours on my own and with Quicken and MS support on chats and remote control sessions, Quicken still would not run.  So at that point I had decided, with the help of some posts from one member of the Community, that something in Windows 10 was corrupted, or was no longer able to support applications which it had previously supported with no problems.  So I decided that, if I was going to get Quicken running, I was going to have to uninstall and reinstall Windows 10.  My system was 4.5 years old.  Since reinstalling Windows 10 was going to mean reloading all the software in my system, a big job, I decided to purchase a new computer to hedge against the chance that my old system might have a hardware problem.  So I purchased a new computer which has Windows 10.  I have now gotten everything running again.  However to do that I had to subscribe to Office 365, and even with the new system, my old Quicken 2017 still would not run.  So I upgraded Quicken to a subscription of Quicken 2018, and that ran fine.  After all this, I think in hindsight that there is nothing wrong hardware-wise with my old computer system.  Here is the anecdote: I think there is a big trend now for software companies to go to subscriptions, as compared to the old system of purchasing the software and running it as long as you want.  I think that in all of this, in spite of perhaps their best efforts, the companies are no longer able to support the old software, and as an expedient they are concentrating on the new subscribed software.  In my case I have had to change to subscriptions for Office and for Quicken.  Just an opinion, but you and others having problems with Quicken may have to consider upgrading to a subscription of the latest software.  Hopefully you will not have to also reload Windows.  Good luck.
