Hi, recently my computer crashed and has corrupted my .dat files on my accounts package.  I have decided to reinstall the software (Quickbooks 2006) but when I try, I get the message "setup cannot find c:\windows\COMMAND.COM and therefore aborts the setup.  Can anybody help?

Hi Madmaz,

Step 1 in detail:

i. Click start button->type in %windir%/system32 in the search bar and hit enter.

ii. On that window, search for command.com

iii. Highlight and right click on it and select copy

iv. Again click on start button-> Type in %windir% and hit enter

v. Right click on the blank space and select paste.

Hope this helps.

Hi - thanks for the quick response.  Yes, copying the command.com file to the WIndows file helped, but then I was told that Quickbooks hadn't been installed correctly and could not be deleted.  Jeez!  Any other suggestions??

    Hi Madmaz,

    1. QuickBooks looks for the command.com file in c:\windows but in Windows Vista it has been moved to: c:\windows\System32. So simply copy this file to c:\windows.
    2. Run the QuickBooks installer as administrator.
    3. Just right click the setup file (exe file) and choose"run as Administrator"

The install should then complete without any issues.
