windows update error (Error code: 0x80240020)

original title: windows update error + others

Hi, I am expericing windows xp update error 0x80240020, I am also are getting a blue screen about twice a week with 'irql_not_less_or_equal'   with the resultant crash. I am unable to install windows updates (though can download them)...can you please suggest some troubleshooting steps or solution.

I have tried 'fix it' and one or two other solutions suggested...to no avail.

    I got that same error message when upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 Starter. I did it by doing it via 'cmd' today. Did that caused the error?
